For the money, a superb package
I started out on a Japanese Strat copy back in the early 1980s. It was my main guitar for 10 years and I've followed it up with a few of the real thing, Mexican and Japanese versions at least. This is a full size Chinese Strat style guitar and costs less than my first Strat copy, yet comes with spare strings, a digital tuner, a strap, a lead, instructions and 2 Allen keys to help you adjust the neck and string length, alongside instructions to help you set up the guitar. Mine arrived with a slightly bowed neck, which was easily fixed with a quick turn of the truss rod (as explained in the instructions) and my strings were all sharp at the 12th fret, which again is easily fixed by tightening the string saddles (with the other Allen key). The guitar seems well made, albeit clearly the materials are fairly cheap. Whatever wood they're using for the body is ridiculously light and everything works well, with no sharp frets, no string buzz, no rattles and no dead spots. The wiring on the tone controls is a little odd and doesn't control the pick-up you think it will, but it's easy to get used to. The 5-way pickup selector works well and gives a great variety of tones. I found the pick-ups a bit low and improved the sound by bringing them closer to the strings with a cross-head screwdriver. Sound-wise, it doesn't come close to the real thing, but it's a pleasant, clear sound with some twang. You're bound to get some corners cut on such an affordable machine. The ceramic pick-ups aren't the best, although raising them does improve the sound. The tuners are the most notably rubbish component and could maybe do with oiling, they twitch and struggle a little at tension. The strings are also fairly poor and I'd recommend swapping them immediately for some Ernie Balls or d'Addarios. These are not in the same ballpark as the equivalent Squier Strats, but then a Squier will cost more and second hand, will often come with some of the same problems, in terms of neck straightness and string tuning. For the price, these are fantastic guitars and a great starter package.
