Pond Armor SKU-BLACK-QT-R Non Toxic Pond Shield Epoxy Paint, 1.5-Quart, Black

This is probably not an intended use for the product, but I was at a crossroads when updating my basement bathroom: I needed to either switch my shower pan or coat it in a type of black water-friendly epoxy. I also had a situation where I had bare wood, PVC joints, and some cracks that needed to be sealed. Because of this and because I already had the surround tiled, I opted to try this product after quite a bit of research. Worst thing: I'm out $60 and move forward with changing out the pan. To prep, I cleaned all applicable surfaces extensively with bleach. Then I applied PVC primer on all the plastic surfaces. The product is thick, so taping off areas with painters tape worked very well for clean lines. I opted to use 90% isopropyl that I had around... I'm in Minnesota, and just about the only places I could find that had 99% were certain hardware stores if they carried epoxy type paint products, and they were at least in gallon sizes and expensive. You could probably order smaller/cheaper 99% isopropyl online along with this paint, but at the time I was taking on this project it wasn't really an option because of the pandemic. 90% worked fine for me, it probably would have been better to use 99% for better paint mixture and finish. Working with the product wasn't too bad. I made sure to work in batches using disposable cups, making about 8oz at a time. What I loved about this paint was that it had little to no odor; if anything it faintly smelled like ball point pen ink. The epoxy also didn't eat up any of my cheap foam brushes or rollers along the way. Clean up was also easy with the isopropyl. All these factors did not apply with other DIY epoxy kits I've tried, which was huge because I was working in a poorly ventilated bathroom and had pets that were sensitive to fumes. Drying time took a little longer than expected and the finish occasionally left bubbles of unset epoxy. I attribute this to not using better isopropyl and possibly having mix ratios slightly off. It actually worked in my favor because the product dries glossy and having texture from the bubbles was a good safety measure. Also because my situation called for black paint and was in low light, I had no problems with an inconsistent finish. If a perfect finish is desired, I don't think this paint would be capable of that nor is it really intended for that. I've been using the shower regularly with no complications for a few months. I've dropped things on it many times and it all still holds up. It also appears to have sealed my wood, gaps and cracks very well, preventing mildew from getting in. Even if the finish becomes compromised over time, I'll have no problem touching it up. I'm so glad I came across this!

Great product. Thinned with 1/4 cup Everclear 190 proof alcohol. Mixed whole batch in 3 qt container. Poured into bottom of pond liner and used small roller to spread. Caution: Ordered again. Followed same process. 112 degrees outside, same as garage. Cans also ambient temperature. Mixture setup in 5 minutes in mixing can. This time keeping product in refrigerator before mixing.

Just finished my 330 gallon plywood fish tank and just water tested it and it held over night. So far so good no leaks. I have heard really good things about this product and it just saved me about 3k for my new interior wall tank. In the next couple months or year I will return to review its durability and see how it holds over time. Anyone that's wondering about the time it dries be very careful it will start Harding on you quick so just make enough to apply in 30 mins and follow instructions and watch some YouTube videos. I did 3 coats just in case over the recommended and fiber glass corners. I only had to buy two sets for my 330 gallon tank and had some left over but did an extra coat. It’s has been 4 years now and tank is still holding up amazing product

I took all my measurements and ordered this amount based on my square footage of surface area to paint. However, I got less than two-thirds through the first coat and ran out. I had been originally thinking that if I just got at least one coat out of it, I would try it out and see if I could get by without the second coat. This is partly because the manufacturer told me that the thickness is based on the coverage, so that if I got the coverage that it claimed, this would tell me that it was also necessarily the recommended thickness. Since I hadn't even finished the first coat though, I had to wait for another order to come in the mail to finish the job. The instructions stated that if you wait for than half a day to put on the second coat, you need to abrade the first coat first, which is another step with possibly more complications in between. And even with the second order, I still didn't get to finish the second coat, but I made sure to get all of the problem areas a second time at least, so I probably had double or triple thickness in some areas in the end! I think the lower coverage may have been due in part to the roughness of my surface, as my pond is built out of many rough stones, but given that stone is one of the stated use cases for this product, I would expect the coverage numbers to be accurate for stone as well. I'm not sure what to recommend about the coverage though. On the one hand, if you over-purchase, this is a very expensive product to over-spend on. But on the other hand, if you buy just the right amount, but then run out and have to wait several days for a new order to arrive, the window for re-coating will have passed, and you will have to worry about abrading the first coat, and also whether the second coat might have trouble adhering, or whether some neighbor kid through their ice-cream pop all over your first coat in the meantime, or maybe geese pooped all over your first coat. I suppose you could cover it with a tarp or something. In any case, my second coat seemed to go on fine, so maybe that's not a big deal. I'll have to wait and see how it preforms over time to really know if this hurt me or not.

So first thing is the results are great. I was coating the inside of a 180 gallon snake terrarium outside on a 93 degree day. But it is tricky to use at first. Tips: #1 It mixes thick so consider thinning with some alcohol, just a little. #2 Heat dramatically effects the setup time. At 93 degrees I only had about 5-7 minutes of working time. At 84 degrees I had 7-10 minutes. So mix small batches, I did 8oz at a time and worked quickly. #3 Plan on two coats. The viscosity feels thick but in a minute or two after application it will sag or run. Trick is to position to avoid vertical surfaces. #4 It is really hard to get off your hands, I wore spots of it for a week. So use gloves. #5 Use disposable brushes, one for each batch. So even with all that I like the results so much I'm back to buy more for the next terrarium.

I'm going to be the first to admit I never should have attempted to use this product as it was defective from the start. One of the cans arrived with the seal broken and the contents oozing out. I then decided to do a small test piece to see if the product was viable. The hardener was fine, but the black paint (which is the container that arrived with the seal cracked and contents oozing) itself was lumpy no matter how thoroughly I attempted to mix it. I went ahead with testing, followed the directions exactly and ended up with a nice coating albeit lumpy. I applied a second coat after the first cure. When the second had cured, I placed the test piece outdoors for 48 hours. I though to myself this would be great if it weren't lumpy. HOWEVER, after two months underwater, this is fading already and has a white cast appear when the water is drained from the surface.

After building a concrete fountain in the summer of 2018 I knew I would have to coat the inside with something or it would look like pea soup. After searching a bit I came across pond armor. I decided to give it a try after reading reviews, and watching videos. If you follow the instructions you'll end up with a nice finished product. I first sanded the stucco to make sure the i had a smooth and even surface to bond to. Next I gave the surface a wash with muriatic acid to really open it up. After everything dried for a few days I began mixing the two parts together. The whole process is fairly straight forward if you do the prep work before hand. I used a small roller, and a disposable brush. I did a coat in the morning and one later in the day, sanding between coats. Pond armor does have that chemical smell to it, but any coating that lasts over time does. I waited two days after finishing to add water, and a week to add some goldfish. I'm writing this review over a year after using pond armor. The product has done exactly what it claimed to, and has withstood the seasons of NC. The gloss black goes with everything. I will be using this product again when I build a plywood aquarium this winter.

This is a great product to use. The instructions in the box are very easy to follow. Stuff is a little messy but want paint isn't. The final product is awesome.. Couldn't have been happier.

I used this to seal a concrete based, brick-built and rendered pond 20 cm below and 50cm above ground. Five days after three coats we had a lot of rain I now have negative pressure groundwater leaking into my pond where it has split the brittle, tissue paper thick layer that this product dries to. Might be ok for a professionally made solid concrete, fully waterproofed pond but not at all forgiving and in my opinion not suitable for an amateur pond builder unless you are certain your pond is perfectly stable and completely leak-proof before you apply it.

I bought 2 cans this to seal a 48” x 30” x 36” plywood tank. The structure is solid with 2” x 2” wood strips framed around top and bottom and 1/2” plywood on both sides. I applied pond armor and fiberglass all the seems. I let the whole thing cure for 2 weeks before doing a water test. Upon performing the water test I discovered a leak at the bottom of the tank. I called customer support and discussed the issue and was advised to buy more pond armor and recoat my tank. I did that and still the leak appeared in the same spot. I called again only to be told that pond armor is very brittle and even the slightest of movement will break the bond between the epoxy and will create a leak. I wish I knew this before purchasing this item 4 times only to figure out another way to waterproof the tank. NOT WORTH IT. STAY AWAY
