Excellent Book for the beginner!!!
This book is absolutely perfect for the beginner/intermediate user of any DAW outside of protools. I dove into protools before getting this book and managed to do a few recordings on my own; this book allowed me to do basic things that I didn't know were possible or made things I was already doing a bit easier or allowed me to go further with each feature. The problem many people have with this book is the DVD that comes with it. You need quicktime and you also need to copy the files to your pc; they play horribly from the dvd-rom drive or don't play at all; once you copy the files/folders to your mac or pc; you're good money!!!!Buy this book; you won't be sorry!

Great Book for Certification
This has been a great book for reviewing for the initial certification exam. Its is very well laid out and easy to follow and understand. The book also has two useful hands on projects to practice working with Pro Tools 8. As a Pro Tools user for five years, I found that this text has filled in gaps of my knowledge and has sped up my ability to access aspects of the program and has resulted in speeding up my work flow. I am looking forward to working with the 110, 201 and 210 texts.

big help for pro tools users
It's a little frustrating that that pro tools doesn't include an adequate user manual with its software. I gave the protools courseware 4 stars for this reason. It is a thorough, well laid out resource that answers all questions. [well, maybe not the meaning of life...] If you're stuck and don't want to waste a lot of time trying to figure out protools on your own, this is the way to do it.

Better to take the class
I selected 2 day shipping from Amazon and it arrived in that time frame. As for the book, it has a steep learning curve compared to other recording software but if you want to use what the majority of pro studios use then you must learn pro tools. I bought the book in hopes of taking a class to go with it but since I got laid off from work I could not afford the class so I tried to teach myself. Even though I can setup basic tracks for recording audio I would recommend taking the class as I have so many other questions that either the book can not offer or I do not understand. I have had this book for about 3 months and I do not feel confident in using pro tools yet. Finally, It would have been nice for Pro Tools 101 to instruct you on how to hook up a mixer to the Aux line 3 and 4 of the Mbox Pro. I want to use a mixer to record overhead drums and since the manual doesn't really give any clear indication it's all trial and error. The book is informative but it's a little frustrating that it is taking so long to understand this book completely. Once I get a job I will be taking a class to piece everything together.

Pro Tools for College
This book is just an updated version from PT7. It does have some changes here and there but I think if your an engineer in training, like I am or a big engineer working at Sony, I think everyone should have this book as a refrence. It does not teach you PT in an instance but it will guide you through some technical difficulties you might have and save you some money from calling Tech Services!

The best!
I had six audio classes, this should of been the first book we used! I got more from this book than I did taking the classes. If you are new to Pro tools 8, this is a good beginners book! It has two tutorials that walk you through projects that will help you get to know pro tools. The included DVD has additional instructional videos on it.

Great book
This book tells you the ins and outs to understand and get started on Pro Tools 8. Explains basic stuff like hardware needed, to basic editing. Has great tips and a lot of shortcuts. Don't expect to be pro tools savvy after reading this book, but have basic knowledge to open/ close your session and do basic stuff like record, edit mix, bounce.

excellent resource!
This book certainly is a nice "go-to" guide. It really covers everything concisely and with good pictures. I recommend it for all users who aren't experts already.

The Definitive Guide
This book is part of the official courseware written by Digidesign. It forms the foundation for all further training in Pro Tools. Not only is the book reasonably priced, but this latest edition - updated for Pro Tools 8 - is full of illustrations, images and clear concepts. It introduces the basics of LE and HD systems, with nice clear systems diagrams. Pretty much all the important boxes are shown. In this way it has to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the market. It touches on the basics of using Pro Tools - more depth is found in the "Pro Tools 110" courware - but you'll need to contact an approved Digidesign Training Partner to find get your hands on that book. It's hard to imagine a clearer introduction to using Pro Tools for complete beginners. A accompanying CD contains samples projects for part 3 of the book and some video training. It's important when learning Pro Tools to get a good introduction that covers the basics before you try to fly. In this way you'll get less confused when you come to do more complex thinngs. So, I would say, this book is a must for new beginners and those who missed out on a decent start with Pro Tools. After reading this book you'll quickly want to progress to more advanced topics. The Digidesign documentation and other books may be of use by then.
