The Original and still the best version
For some reason the stars won't allow me to give it 5 stars! But it is the original and still the best translation of the novel for the screen. Holds up extremely well and the cast is first rate. Well worth the money and time to watch.

Wonderful original
It's the wonderful original! I didn't grow up with this like my partner, but after seeing the newer theatrical remake, I wanted to watch it. If you enjoyed the recent Shogun, you'll appreciate how closely they followed this. Stars Richard Chamberlain (who was fantastic!)Mini series on 5 discs. Plan on spending just over 9 hours watching these.

A GenX & Baby Boomer must have!
So, have you watched the latest version of Shogun? Did you watch the miniseries back in the 80’s? If not, this review may not help you.Me and my dad watched the original with Richard Chamberlain when it was a mini-series on the tv’s with human channel changers. Loved it, loved the acting, loved the characters & story. Then came 2024 and a highly stylistic and beautifully shot Shogun was released. Loved that one too. But…I found myself being judgy about the actors, with the exception of Toranaga, he was magnificent. Anyway, I really wanted to show my wife the original, and I was thrilled to see that Amazon had it. She hooked up the ol’ dvd player (can you believe THOSE are almost obsolete now?!) and we went back in time to the fantastic Richard Chamberlain and his mastery. And while you’re watching, don’t forget to get a chuckle from the tech-challenged limitations we had then. I recommend this completely, and who knows, maybe dvd sets will become important artifacts one day?

Hard to find product at a reasonable rate
After watching the new series definitely wanted to go back again and watch the old series. Richard Chamberlain really carried the part a lot better than the new actor. It brought back a lot of memories totally happy that the product and reasonable price compared to other sellers.

Very good quality video.
My husband really wanted this. I was a little worried about ordering it online. However, it shipped quickly and the video quality is excellent. Also, the extra disk that told the story of how the series was filmed was a welcome extra.

On the whole it's an excellent collection.
Have owned this for a long time and still enjoy watching it.To start off, it's a little inconvenient having so many discs, not to mention that DVD's have become dinosaurs in their own right. It's a little corny and unbelieveable with regard to the story line, but the drama unfolds well. The scenery, authentic set locations, costumes, narration, music, and casting were excellent. As a viewer I'm sure you'll have no problem being immersed in the story very quickly.A few bonuses you'll get with these DVD's that you don't get with online ownership are behind the scenes videos, cast interviews, and production stories. On the whole it's an excellent collection.

Reliving a classic
Just how you remembered it on tv. Just no commercials.
