Crossfire - 4000 front drag spinning reel from Daiwa
I was in the market for a 4000 series spinning reel and after reading about several different reels, this Daiwa Crossfire Front Drag Spinning Reel caught my attention. I have seen this reel offered for sale in the marketplace, as a combo, by a dealer who would put them on a more expensive rod for sale. I didn't know much about the quality of this specific reel, but it felt pretty smooth and the evident quality of the rod would sell the combo. I didn't sucker for the $100 combo, but I did remember the reel, as Crossfire kind of stuck in my head. When I got a deal for $25.95 on one with free shipping, I took it and am satisfied with the quality of Diawa's spin reel. I have learned that the acceptable quality of the newer reels offered, hold up fairly well and better than those in past years at lower prices. I have several reels, in my library of used equipment, that are inferior in quality to about anything out there that I would consider paying for. Here on the Gulf of Mexico coast where I fish, the environment on the shore, bays and on the boat causes some problems for reels. Corrosion can occur when you forget to rinse your reel off after each time out, in hot weather when you come home spent and you just sit your rodnreels down in the front of the garage and then you grab and open a beer, only to forget them until it is too late. It's surely the beer combined with the heat that causes this. This reel has a anodized spool and holds up as well as any I've owned. My other reels have all experience my neglect and for the price this reel performs well and seems good with the neglect. I do now try to rinse them each time though, but braid holds moisture more than mono and I used braid on this reel. So, I hope it continues to perform. If not, I will return to this review and adjust the comments and Stars to reflect what happens. I like it though and at this time will purchase more in the future. I am sure I will respect and take better care of this Reel, and the Diawa Sweepfire rod it is on, than in the past! I recommend this combination of rod and reel and will purchase Diawa fishing equipment in the future.

Probably My New Favorite Budget Ultralite Reel
This little reel was recommended by a friend who recently purchased one of these tiny little reels. Until I received this little reel the Pinnacle Tiny Deadbolt was my all-time favorite budget ultralite spinning reel. I think this one will become my new favorite. First off it spools the line perfectly even on the spool so the timing between spool oscillation and rotation is as good as it gets for any price. This is more important than many people realize as uneven line lay on the spool can greatly reduce casting distance. Secondly it is very smooth for an ultralite spinning reel for under $25. The anti-reverse bearing is as instant as any reel I own including some very expensive ones. Having the anti-reverse stopping backward handle rotation instantly is a huge thing for me. I own a few reels costing many times over what this costed that don't do as well with instant anti-reverse. The body of the real is almost identical to the Tiny Deadbolt in size but the spool is larger in diameter. The larger diameter spool helps with both casting distance and reduces spool memory over the smaller spool. This reel also weighs a fair amount less than the Tiny Deadbolt. The Tiny Deadbolt has been a favorite of mine ever since they came out. I don't take particularly good care of them but I have yet to wear one out or have any issues even after several seasons of hard use with little to no maintenance. I can't speak for the life expectancy of this reel yet but I've had very good luck with inexpensive Daiwa branded reels in the past. I expect it will last a long time with reasonable care. Not nearly as important to me as some of the other features I find the looks of this reel very appealing as well. I would and already did buy more. It's really tough to beat this reel at it's current price. If you like fishing ultralite tackle I'd say just take the plunge and buy one or two or three. You won't regret it.

Ball bearings
I bought the Crossfire 4000 and I am very satisfied with the quality and price. I know a lot of folks are concerned about the number of ball bearings in both spinning and casting reels these days. Manufacturers have not missed this marketing opportunity and have miraculously incorporated bearings where never before thought possible. There was a time not so long ago when one ball bearing in a spinning reel was adequate. That was (and is) found on the main shaft, at the pinion gear. Those older, vintage reels were supported at the drive locations with nylon bushings. Then the bushings got upgraded with ball bearings. Fine. People, you do not need more than 3 bearings, either ball or roller. You will very likely never wear out a reel if you take care of it - service it yourself or have it done. But - especially if you fish the salt - you need to rinse the reel in fresh water, and preferably warm - and IMMEDIATELY after fishing...not tomorrow. Do not use pressure to rinse the salt off, because the pressure will likely drive the salt into deeper locations. Just warm, slow running water is best. And, if the reel has beem immersed in salt water - take the spool off and immerse both the reel and spool in a bowl or bucket of warm, fresh water and leave it there for a while. Then allow to dry, before replacing the spool. Eventually, you will need to take the reel completely apart and re-grease. I like the synthetic grease, as it never hardens like organic grease. Take care of your tools and they will take care of you. *** Again, you do not need more than 3 bearings.

Good enough
If you are prone to damaging your gear. This will do. It's a reel. But if you use weekly and take care of your stuff, this may not be for you. It works well, zero mechanical issues. But each time I grab a Shimano reel I can tell that this ain't the same thing. Again, does the same job as the Shimano, it just does have that indescribable feel/touch/????

Very solid reel, very smooth, it's not loud and I mean the positive click drag and the spool drag. The whole reel is very quiet and light. I have 16 of these reels and I love them. I would recommend this reel as a well priced high quality, high performance reel, well worth it, and it comes in different sizes to fit all kinds of rod sizes. Delivery was fast and well packed. Excellent.
