Does it measure the temperature at the tip of the probe, or must the whole 20" probe be the same temperature to get a sensible reading?

The sensitive portion is the last 2 inches at the tip of the probe. So you don't have to necessarily put the entire stem into the compost pile.

Will this work to tell the temp in hay bales?

Yes. that is what I use them for and they work really well. I locate the bales that are the hottest and leave the REOTEMP in the bale and look at it daily. My last hay was not as dry as I would have liked and I put the REOTEMP in when it read 120F three days after baling. It went to 140F and then came back to 120 when I removed it yesterday.

Extremely upset. Defective product. Delay in delivery

Is there a negative start option available at Amazon? Coz this one deserves NO star at all.Me and my friends ordered 3 thermometers as we wanted to start the compost pile in summer. All 3 turned out to be defective. It wasn’t calibrated and showed the temperature as 45 - 55 F in ice.I got it replaced and the next one had the exact same issue. It almost looked like they are sending the same thermometer again again.It’s rainy season now and still haven’t been able to get one good thermometer for the last 3 months!Every time I order the delivery time is 15-20 days and on the day if delivery it gets updated and says delayed. And then the package gets lost! And finally arrives after another 10 days of waiting!I understand it needs to be shipped from US but come on more than 30 days to deliver?! Is that fair?? And after all the waiting it’s a defective product.Such a waste of money and time. Super annoyed and I thought Reotemp is the best manufacturer for compost thermometer. If this is what best looks like I wonder how they would operate if they were not the best.
