Read every code I've tried, including transmission codes
I build customized cars for a living, usually that entails installing a modern obd2 powertrain into an older vehicle. This can be a pain with emissions compliance and code reading. I had been using an older code reader for years and it was helpful but I ran into a problem on a 4.6l modular Ford motor that was throwing a transmission code that my reader couldn't pick up. In fact the only reason I knew it had a code was the powertrain was from a Lincoln that had a message center display that ready "check transmission" I searched high and low for a new reader to use and, if you are reading this you probably already know, that can be a nightmare to find a good reader. A lot of the expensive readers are expensive because they include OBD1 and EEC IV plugs that are useless to anyone with a 1996 or newer vehicle. I settled on this reader after seeing 5 posts stating that it reads transmission codes and after seeing a lot of other readers that advertise that feature falling short in real life situations.I read that it's a little advanced and hard to navigate but maybe because I'm used to the older mechanic oriented ones it seems pretty straight forward to me. It can be updated via a computer but does not need anything out of the box.It takes 4 aa batteries but only if u want to use it away from the vehicle. While it's plugged in it's powered by the car. I don't keep batteries in it because I have had betteries leak and ruin electronics before so I'd say that's a plus.My old reader read 6 codes, all based on removed or modified emissions components, the Actron read 18, although some were duplicates because it would read the same code two times if one was a stored code and one was a pending code. It did in fact pick up the transmission code, which was an open circuit on my trans temurature sensor which in turn was caused by a dirty connection at the wire harness. Another code it read that the old one didn't was the open fuel level circuit. That was due to running a different fuel level sending unit but it was nice to see that it had access to it.The Actron can run tests specific to the vehicle you are working on, for instance my power plant was originally in a 98 Lincoln mark viii so I added that vehicle to the Actron (it saved it even without batteries) and ran checks of the emissions system and the PCM for manufacturer specific issues. Later on I was able to access the short term fuel trim (stft) and it will show you a live reading in a handy graph form that's easy to read on the fly. Helped me diagnose a PVC vacuum issues because of tiny little flutters that I would not have noticed on my own.Overall it's a very handy tool, maybe a little advance for what most people need it for, which I'm imagining is clearing the MIL after replacing an o2 sensor or a gas cap, but it's half the price of the next closest reader I could find and seems to have a high ceiling on its capabilities

The best way to update this excellent tool!
I have had this tool over a year now and before I bought it, I had read some reviews with bad comments about updating this product. It is a hard product to update but I have some information as how to update it. I got this info from actron's support people. I was told to go to otctools.com, select support and then downloads. When you get there you will find a drop down menu and you will want to select 3111 and down load it. Its a big file about 321 mega bytes. I ran the program with my actron cp9580 hooked up to my pc. I selected to update the Otc suite and It recognized my actron and updated to the 4.0 scanning suite found on actron.com. The whole otc program converted to the 4.0 scanning suite and I was then able to update my Actron. The update Is great because not only does it go to the later veheicles it will detect them automatically. I did this after spending a few hours on Actrons website downloading scanning suite 4.0 and following the details as how to update it there. Believe me this works. I went out and put it on my wifes car which is a 2009 and it detected her vehicle with ease and no more selecting domestic, year and make of vehicle etc. I have used this tool a few times now and it works great. Excellent tool for the money
Item was delivered promptly and was new in box exactly as advertised. I bought the suggested cable but turns out you don't need it as the tool comes with a nice long cable attached. So far I have used this on a variety of vehicles and have not had any problems. It scanned and read the codes on all of the vehicles. The code connect feature really makes this tool useful since often the code doesn't really give you that much info. I have a friend who is a professional mechanic and he has a SnapOn scanner that cost several times as much and the Actron has almost all of the same features- at least almost any feature that most home mechanics would ever need.I took one star off because the layout of the control buttons is not very intuitive and its easy to hit the wrong button as you try to go thru the menus. Also the manual that came with mine is not very detailed and the online manual isn't much better.Overall I would say this is an excellent value for the money. For any reasonably handy home mechanic it is easy to use and seems to work well. It has definitely saved me more than the cost of the tool.
