Get this gadget. Maybe two!
I use this Tensun 4K HDMI to HDMI Optical SPDIF TOSLINK Converter Adapter with 3.5mm RCA R/L Stereo output with a separate power amp for my surround sound system to replace a $700 ONKYO receiver. Total price doing this was like $160. Completely works well! Forget SoundBars and replacing your surround sound speaker system. You get Kick butt sound and picture for the price without having to replace the great speakers you already have!

Works perfectly. Allows me to continue using my older AV receiver.
The picture is a little misleading. The case is only one layer and they are showing both sides at once. I used this to split the audio from my Amazon Fire Stick's HDMI output into this box, out to an older AV receiver without HDMI. The HDMI video signal then went out to my projector. It works perfectly. Since the converter and fire stick are both powered by USB, I just bought a multi-port USB charger.

I didn't test this on my other devices so it may be the nintendo (Edit: it is)
I bought this to use it for the Nintendo switch since my receiver only accepts optical audio for surround sound. it works for the video pass through to the tv but the audio was only in stereo (well pro logic stereo). Not sure if its the device or the switch. or If I did something wrong since the surround sound test on the switch menu only used 2 channels. I flipped the convertor to 5.1 and plugged it in the outlet and it still came out the same. I didn't test this on my other devices so it may be the Nintendo or the device (or I did something wrong since it works for other reviewers) But pro logic stereo is better than stereo from the tv. So I like it.EDIT: So i did a little more research to see what was going on. Seems like the Nintendo Switch uses uncompressed surround sound through LPCM audio which optical audio doesn't have the bandwidth for. So all you'll get out of optical audio is stereo (or pro logic simulated surround sound * stereo L/R, center speaker, and mono back L/R from the Nintendo Switch) The reason it works for some other systems is because MS and Sony decided to pay for the encoding of Dolby Digital 5.1 which is compressed and can be sent through optical (which can then be decoded by the receiver) Nintendo was to cheap to get use dolby surround. much like their crappy internet services we have to suffer if we aren't up to date with our technology. But the device works so I updated the stars.

Do not buy if you need sound on HDMI to pass through...
See Update Below...While it DOES extract audio to the optical out, it does not pass audio out thru the HDMI to my TV, even when PASS is selected on the 3 position slide switch. What makes matters work, my Sony TV puts up a error message on-screen saying that the audio is not the right standard.I could live without a pass-thru I suppose, but how am I supposed to watch TV with that graphic up? No settings on the TV will fix this, so I'm forced to conclude that for me, this unit is useless.Update: ok, this product was not at fault, at least not entirely. HDMI is more than video+audio; it is also communication. When my TV, which does not accept 5.1 audio is connected to a blueray player (for example), and that player is set to output 5.1 over the HDMI, the TV must be communicating to it to say "NO. Give me 2 channel output (mixdown?) over HDMI" and it does. When the Tensun is in between, IT IS WHAT COMMUNICATES to the source machine. The selector switch must tell the source what type of audio to give it. However, if 5.1 is selected, then 5.1 continues through to the TV, without the TV's demand for 2-channels being heard. This, IMHO, is what leads to the TV's on-screen error message. Luckily, if i bring the TV volume all the way down to zero (which is fine as there is no sound from the TV at this point anyway), the error message goes away, and I am from to send 5.1 audio to my receiver via the optical output. Also, for some reason, passthrough is now working. I have no explanation for this.

product does not support HDMI(ARC)
Love your product. Worked as expected. However, this product does not support HDMI(ARC).

Works exactly as expected !
I used this to split out audio from my ps5 to get rid of latency caused by Bluetooth. This works amazing and has 0 latency and doesn't cause signal issues.

TLDR: Poor quality, does not work
In this case, you do not get what you pay for. At $22.99, I expect a product that works. This one does not. After connecting my HDMI-in, HDMI-out, and 3.5mm audio-out, I tried playing a video. As far as the video quality goes, the color is incredibly washed out on my display now with a green tint. For the audio, the sound does come through to the speakers, but it's so faint that you could only hear it if the room were entirely quiet, and even then you need to be listening within several inches of the speaker to notice the sound. The reviews for this product seemed high enough (3.8/5 stars, 145 reviews), so I definitely did not expect this. I suppose the company has some dead-on-arrival rate for their products, so it could just be that my unit is a dud. For me, the build quality feels cheap enough that I'm opting to return it rather than take another chance and having to ship an additional item back.

The TENSUN audio extractor saved the day.
My 2 yr old LG bedroom TV optical output failed making my Sennheisers wireless headphones dead in the water.I came across this Tensun audio extractor and took a chance and bought it, hooked up HDMI cables and, thank goodness, perfect sound is back.I used an old USB phone charger for power, the connector is the common USB-C.The quality is high, package well designed and the instruction manual is great. A well worth the price purchase.
