.com As portrayed by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, the romantic antagonists in Nora Ephron's e-mail age remake of Ernst Lubitsch's classic The Shop Around the Corner are variously witty, annoying, urbane, and self-absorbed. That's just the recipe for a frisky musical score, and George Fenton delivers with style (even the "annoying" part is playful here) and just a tip of the hat to the early ragtime and other Americana influences of Randy Newman at his best. The classic Arlen-Harburg "Over the Rainbow" is a recurring motif, and the album also features a wistful Gordon Jenkins arrangement sung by the late, great Harry Nilsson. The singer's beautiful "Remember" is also featured, his two-decades-old performance interpolated into a new arrangement by Fenton. Drama is easy, the old maxim goes, comedy is hard; and nothing is harder to convincingly score than a romantic comedy. Fenton does a fine job of it here. --Jerry McCulley

This completes a great sound track
I loved the music from "You've Got Mail" and bought the CD of it's sound track, but felt something was missing from it. What was missing was the instrumental background music that accompanies the scenes. I've taken this CD and along with my first CD burnt a complete soundtrack for the movie and it's great. I would definitely recommend this one and suggest you also combine the two CDs for a great one.

meet cute via music
All your favorite songs with the hint of the cute little ditties between. You find that you (if you're anything like me) are reminded of the exact scene and moment that little ditty occurs in the movie and what the characters say.

Not the CD I expected..
When I ordered this CD I was expecting to get the songs listed in the description. I especially wanted the Puppy Song by Harry Neison. When it arrived and I played it, I was really shocked that none of the songs listed were on it! It was an instrumental with songs that were probably on the movie but not the songs I had bought the CD for. I sent it back and bought the MP3 ne of the Puppy song. That's okay that's really the only song I wanted anyway. It was obviously a screw up with whoever listed the CD on Amazons site.

Not worth the trouble
This CD is the filler music from the film. The background compositions the editor uses for transitions without dialog and occasionally under dialog. The absence of such music is what distinguishes an "English Movie" for people my age. It's pleasant music, and occasionally lively as befits the film, but not worth the trouble to buy as a separate CD.The CD "You've Got Mail" (as opposed to "M@il" in this title) provides the eclectic mix of vocals from several performers that complement the actors' performances so well in this movie. Get that one, skip this one -- and watch the movie again to see if you can spot when these cuts are edited in behind the action. That's the best way to listen to them.

Fenton's finest: feels like dancing
If you don't know the movie, don't worry. This score can do without. Not that 'You've got m@il' is bad, on the contrary: it's a great comedy. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is wonderful. But the music written by George Fenton is that good, that it actually can do without. Try to listen to it without picturing the Bookshop Around the Corner or the streets of New York in early morning. It's like listening to a ballet in a bar. Some of it with a classical touch, some of it modern, some of it adorably corny. To me this score is like an open invitation to get up, and move around in the living room, pretending I'm dancing. A double victory for mister Fenton: not only did he get me dancing, he did exactly what this movie needed: Tom and Meg's chemistry put to music.NB. Beside this 'Original Motion Picture Score You've Got M@il' there's also another cd on the market called 'Music from the Motion Picture You've Got Mail'. The latter contains 14 tracks with popular songs from performers such as Harry Nilsson, Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante, plus about 5 minutes from the score composed by George Fenton.
