Akitio Thunder3 Duo Pro (Thunderbolt3 - Enclosure Only) - Windows ONLY : Currently not Supported by Mac

I've been running this thing for 7 months now. I usually keep it plugged into my laptop and it's great for that alone. The nice thing is that I can switch it to my gaming PC or even bring it to work. I can switch out the drives super easily any time I want which is nice because I have a stack of old 250-1000gb ssds and hdds and I can now easily use them for specialized back up storage where before they were nearly useless. It has two bays that can handle nearly any drive no matter the size or capacity so switching them out will be rare for most people.You can use this with computers that aren't Thunderbolt 3 but you need the proper chords, of course. I don't use the RAID feature so I can't attest to that.Keep in mind that this is not the most portable of devices but it's still pretty easy to unplug and move around.This was exactly what I was looking for. I can't believe that there aren't more items like this on Amazon, I searched for a very long time before finding it. Also, the price is great compared to other Thunderbolt 3 items out there.

Received used unit, probably a customer return - sealed packaging was opened, sheet metal was scraped where drives had been installed in the enclosure, etc. This would've been fine had I bought it from Amazon Outlet at discount, but I paid for a normal, new/unused unit. Hopefully, it was not returned for being defective. Kudos to whoever returned it - everything that was in the box originally was still there when I unpacked it. That said, the enclosure itself was well constructed, my drives lined up well with the enclosure connectors and mounting screws, and the enclosure connected to my PC and operated as expected.

So the fastest a SATA III drive can output is 6G. Why make these super fast housings when the drives can't match the ports? This enclosure works well. I am happy with the solid construction.The Kensington lock port is a MAJOR bonus. I just did a show in Paris when anything that wasn't locked down was being stolen. I had this enclosure locked and no one even tried to mess with it.I wish the Thunderbolt3 ports also doubled as USB-C ports. They do not. To use USB, you have to use the USB3 port.

Using this on Thunderbolt 3 port of an I7 laptop in striped Raid mode handling ProRes 422 HQ video files at approximately 220Mbps. It handles the throughput flawlessly. I can read and write simultaneously to this enclosure eliminating the need for a scratch disk or other auxiliary storage. This is using quality HDD, not SSD. It has the added advantage of USB 3.0 when it is necessary to connect to a computer without Thunderbolt 3. Perfect enclosure for video work. If I were using it for photo or office files, I would switch to a redundant RAID array for safety.

I've been using this for daily backups for about 3 months now, windows 10 pro, I physically connect and disconnect it from my laptop often and it always shows up and works great!

Hardware RAID, far more reliable than software based RAID. Sleek all aluminum case. On an INTEL Thunderbolt 3 certified Gigabyte high-end motherboard, I managed 470Mb/sec read & write on RAID 0 with two 10T drives. Excellent product!

Somewhat complicated setup. Once it is up and running it is a well designed piece of electronics. Drives are easily swapable without tools. Tech support was helpful.

I have all files in Akitio Thunderbolt 3. The quality and speed of transmission are the tops!

This is the fastest drive enclosure I've ever used to date. Didn't realize it also has an additional usb C port and a displayport connector. For some users having that allows the drive enclosure to be used as a dock, which would otherwise be a few hundred bucks if you were to buy that dock separately. Recommend product.
