Outdoor Research Frostline Hat

Warm and comfy
Obviously I got this for outdoor activities in for colder weather (i.e. winter in Maine) Always had one of those fur lined trapper hats. Was looking for something a little more streamlined that wouldn't look too weird wearing in public. LOLOrdered this hat and love it. I will say that when It first arrived I was a little put off by how thin and flimsy it felt compared to what I was use to wearing. I had serious doubts that it would be warm enough. Well, after wearing it a few times I fell in love with it. Light as a feather, blocks wind like a brick wall, and even sheds water as well as any rain hat I own. I generally wear a little beanie under it which I do with any other winter hat as well. The beanie is simply a little skull cap, actually its sold as a helmet liner. Thin, but adds a lot of warmth to any hat. I haven't tried using the stow away face mask as of yet. But If I'm stuck out in some really cold wind then I'm sure it will be handy to have.Just to clarify how much I love this hat, I recently gave my trapper hat away. Don't need it any longer.LOL

Love this hat!
I've worn this hat on at least 50 climbs in the Northern Sierras and love it! I had to order another one as my first blew off my head in 70 mph winds at the summit of Pyramid Peak ( my fault for not using the chin strap). It's warm without being too hot and totally blocks the wind, and the hidden face mask is a great feature when the cold wind really blows. The Velcro on the chin straps holds the hat in place well and this cap doesn't seem to muffle my hearing like some beanies do. I find the fit to be true and it can be pulled down to feel really snug. I never head up the the mountains in the winter without this hat as it is light and easily packable. You won't be disappointed 😀

Be wary of the size. It runs very small. But a good, warm, hat.
I like the hat. It was warm on a windy 23 degree day. It sits higher on my head than I'm used to, and that makes the small issue real. I wear a large hat, and this just barely makes it in terms of size. If you normally buy an extra large do not buy this hat. I kept it because it proved warm, and its extremely lightweight, folds up small, and with the flaps down it works very well. Glad the day it came was so cold, or I would have returned ti for sure due to the feel that it is too small. Two years later. It’s a truly warm hat, packs to almost nothing, I’d buy it again. Only drawback, other than small size, is the velcro does grab the collar of a down jacket and fuzz the nylon. I’ll end up removingthe velcro, and installing a snap.

Excellent piece of gear - one of a kind
I eyeballed this hat at a store then found it online at a little better, no a lot better price so I went with the better price. The first time I saw this hat and tried it on I wanted it. It's incredible although I've yet to wear it outside yet. I don't know where to start with how much I like this hat. It's super warm insulating material is very cozy - but not bulky or heavy. The shell is made of Pertex Quantum which is one of the best fabrics out there. It's very light and has an awesome hand. I really like the insulated ear flaps that can be flipped out of the way. The lined flip down brim and the pull out facemask are incredible. They took a classic hat style to new heights and made it light and compact for winter backpackers like myself. I think it's outstanding! www.letsgohikeit.com

My wife's favorite hat
My wife spends quite alot of time outdoors walking our dogs, and although we live in the relatively mild climate of northern california, she grew up in southeast asia, and has tricky sinuses. This hat is cozy and warm, but tucks easily into a coat pocket. This is nice because it lets my wife swap between this hat and a visor, on a typical spring/fall day when the temperature will vary by more than ten degrees over the course of a dog walk. The real selling point is the over-the-face (face mask) stowable component. I like to wear a wool scarf to bring up over my chin when necessary when it's really cold or windy - my wife does not. She (and her nose) love this feature, and use it often in winter, through spring. It's a lightweight, breathable mesh, but reduces the effect of the windchill substantially.

Very useful when the cold winds blow.
I love to go for walks outside each day to get exercise, and this versatile hat has helped by stay warm during a particularly brutal winter in the North Eastern USA (2013-2014). The hat is warm yet not bulky. I have worn in it 10F/-12C weather and been very comfortable. If the wind starts blowing, the flaps come down over your ears - and protect you from the wind. Velcro straps secure under your chin to hold it all in place. On the left flap, is a zippered pouch. When opened, and face mask comes out to cover your mouth and nose - and keep them from being bitten by the wind. The only improvement would be if the visor was made stiffer, so it could be folded out to keep snow from your eyes.

Don't feel anything
When you wear this you don't feel any air movement around your head. Its like a personal face bubble, I love it! Not very stylish when it's only half done up but I've never been disappointed with Outdoor Research for cold protection!

EXCELENTE GORRO
