Great tool figuring out OAL
I have been loading .223 for more than a year, and pistol calibers for much longer than that. For my AR I found what a friend used in regards to OAL and load, and started working from there. I got very good results out to 100 yards. Then I started shooting out to 300 yards with my .308 and also brought along the AR. The groups were decent, but as I started to fine tune my .308 loads I also decided to start from scratch on the .223 rounds. I bought this modified .223 case so I could find the exact specs on the chamber of my AR and then work a load from there. Turns out while the rounds I was using gave more than acceptable groups, once I started building rounds that matched my AR my groups at 300 yards were now half the size. This modified case easily connects to the Hornady overall length gauge and gives me the measurements I need to adjust my bullet seating depth to give me the most beneficial bullet to lands distance. While the groups I was getting were more than adequate enough to get the job done, now they are looking much smaller on paper. Not that I am going to try to get my .223 rounds into a single hole at 300 yards, but more because I want to be able to ring a steel plate every single time at that distance.

Very helpful but seldom used
These modified cases are great. Before finding these, I would carefully cut a prepared case with a Dremel tool. I can get more consistent results using this tool in conjunction with the overall length gauge. This is not a tool that you use often, however, so you'll need to decide if it is worth the investment. Once you know the distance to the lands of your chamber then you don't really need to use this again.
