Changes one's Viewpoint
This purchase was a gift for friends with whom we will visit Sicily in the fall (2015). Our own copy -- much used and now dog-eared -- changed the way we travel throughout the Greek classical world. Scully's thesis -- that temple placement reflects the attributes of each god -- opened new ways for our analyzing the architecture we love so much. We do not leave home for the Mediterranean world without photocopied pages from Scully, and we love sitting at each site sharing what he saw. Throw in some Homer, and you have the perfect outline for a memorable vacation. I am so glad this wonderful resource is not out of print but has even enjoyed new editions

Brillant classic, unparalled scholarship and gripping originality
Brilliant insightful book. Some parts may require the reader to have a bit of prior knowledge of Ancient Greece and architecture. As a former student of Scully (the most spellbinding teacher I have ever had), I find that it does not always capture the infectious enthusiasm of his lectures, but it shows well the stunning persuasive depth and range of his scholarship and the breathtaking originality of his thinking.

The Earth, the Temple and the Gods
I bought this for my 13 year old daughter who loves Greek mythology. I thought it would be more about the mythology of the Greek gods based on the name, but it turned out to be very, very intense reading mostly about the architecture, a lot of detail about that aspect. It would be a great book for those who really are into the technical, detailed aspects of the architecture, but not so much for a teen who just loves the mythology.

Absolutely essential book for understanding Greek temples
This book explains and illustrates the quick evolution of Greek temples in ancient times, explaining, in particular, how the muscular, almost squat early Doric columns evolved into tall, elegant ones. It has other insights as to siting and so forth. Its focus is on the artistic spirit of the buildings rather than on archaeology.
