Description

  • Often Called "Aphid Lion" Because Each Larvae Can Eat Up To 1000 Aphids Per Day
  • Also Eats Mites, Thrips, Moth Eggs and More
  • Contains 4000 Eggs

The natural enemy of many species of pests, insects, and mites, the Green Lacewings are shipped as eggs that will soon hatch into larvae. The tiny larvae are known as "Aphid Lions" because of their voracious appetites (devouring as many as 1000 aphids per day). They remain as larvae for up to 21 days, just crawling around looking for food. Aphid Lions also make hearty meals of Mealybugs, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, leaf hoppers, whitefly larvae, a wide variety of moth eggs, and just about any other soft bodied pest. The adult green lacewing only feeds on pollen, but it will immediately begin laying eggs, and the life cycle will repeat. 4,000 eggs. Restricted state: Hawaii

Good company to work with

I tried Green Lacewings to try to organically control a case of soft scale on my Croton. The lacewing larvae were plentiful and vigorous when they arrived. I believe that if my pest had been aphids, I would have been thrilled.Unfortunately, they didn't survive predation by the ants that tend the scale for it's honeydew, and I don't believe that the larvae that did survive were particularly interested in the scale as food source, so it was ineffective as a pest control for scale. But the company customer service worked with me and was very helpful in offering me a lot of advice about how to deal with the ants and the scale.

Don't Order in Hot Weather

I ordered lacewing larvae from another company in the spring, and the package included an ice pack. After sprinkling two batches on my roses, two weeks apart, I didn't have an aphid problem all summer. I ordered the Orcon larvae at the height of summer, and they arrived without an ice pack. You can't actually see the lacewing eggs; what you get are sandwich bags with sawdust in them (and a warning to keep the contents cool ...) I sprinkled the sawdust on a hedge with an insect problem and on the remains of my tomato plants after the long, hot summer. However, I have no idea whether or not the eggs are viable after being exposed to 100 degree heat.

save your $$

Well.... Unless you have the time to baby sit (I do not), I wouldn't get these. Biodynamics may work better. I followed the directions but never saw any of the little guys. I may agin try this winter (So-Cal).
