Very useful in the field
It works great for using as a backing while taking notes in the field. Thick and sturdy, I can't imagine really needing to replace it for a good while unless i just flat out lose it.

GOTTA LOVE IT
I love it! A "shitajiki" is a flexible plastic writing board (or pencil board) that you place under a sheet of your journal page. It provides a smooth writing surface and prevents marking or denting the pages underneath. It is not a "clipboard" so do not expect it to hold on its own. It is NOT so smooth that it slips out easily (or annoyingly--if that is a concern). It does prevent denting the next sheet or "shadow writing." This is to say, having marks from previous pages going over to the next page.If you do not need the ruled side or find it distracting, you can flip it over to a blank side. I have used it for both, or for that matter, I used all its functions.Obviously, it is a good bookmark too.I honestly believe it is the most useful item for a journal, but I also used it as a ruler for household needs too.

Very cool and helpful product. b( ^_^)b
I'm using this for practicing on location sketching. I really like working in a loose, expressive style with simplified objects. This pencil very helpful for keeping things in proportion and getting sizes right. I can use the ruler and also the squares in the grid for units of measurement. My method of sighting is different from the pencil and thumb method. It's easy to take with me. It's light weight. It's about as thick as a gift card, maybe a tad thinner. In size this falls between A5 and B6 paper sizes. I can stick it in the cover of sketchbook or sketch pad and it's right there when I need it. It doesn't get any easier in my opinion. ^_^I realize this is a writing board. I have Rhodia, Maruman, and Midori blank notebooks. It's great for its intended purpose too. My writing can be tilted lol if I don't watch it. This helps with that. The grid which can be seen easily enough under paper is a fine substitute for rulings. Whether one's sketching, taking notes or both, this is nice to have.

Recommended for any TN (traveler’s notebook)
UPDATE (2 months later): I decided to get another one for my other standard size TNs, and they are marked “currently unavailable” I hope they will be for sale again AND in other sizes as well. I still use this product daily.Very helpful. The paper used in the inserts I have bought have been thin and my pens keep tearing the pages. With this I am able to stop that from happening. Plus, I am able to see the lines beneath the page so it helps me to have straighter streams of text on the blank paper I prefer. I have also had a few occasions to use the ruler and I’ve not had this a week yet! I recommend this for anyone with a TN (traveler’s notebook).

Thin, not use for support, but good for tracing and drawing over it.
People, this product is not strong and not see-through. If you want to use it as a writing support, don't buy it.It's thin as several pages of printing paper, but it's made by some kind of plastic. So it's hard to break and thin enough to put it in the notebook. The small square is 5mm, so 2 square is 1cm, pretty standard.

... this to use in my Traveler's Journal and I love it. Placed behind the page I'm writing on
I bought this to use in my Traveler's Journal and I love it. Placed behind the page I'm writing on, this serves two purposes: 1) provides a nice, flat smooth surface to write on, 2) the lines show through the paper, making it easy to line things up and write in a straight line. The third purpose would be to use it like any other ruler to draw a straight line or to measure something. Very handy to have in your calendar or journal.

Perfect for College!
I got it so I can take notes without marking my notebook because my handwriting is heavy.

I really like these pencil boards
These boards are a very good weight and they're the perfect for my Traveler's Notebook. It's not necessary but I have them doubled up. I've taped two of them down one long side so It just gives that much more utility to spread them out on a rough surface like a park bench or table etc. I didn't realize how useful they'd be but now I wouldn't be without them.

I think my piece of chipboard that I was using was at least as good. There is nothing wrong with it
I guess this works, but for this price I was expecting a high quality strong pencil board, but it is very thin.... I think my piece of chipboard that I was using was at least as good. There is nothing wrong with it....just not what I was expecting.
