Hi there, we generously applied the shells to the top of the soil of our raised beds and then tilled in to a depth of about 6-8". We found that this product really helped us with the calcium deficiency we were having here in Colorado, causing end-rot on our tomatoes and peppers. I think we will try applying it around the base of our plants as needed (after big rain events) next year too because, even though it helped tremendously, a few of our plants still had some problems. I think either application of the shells, around roots or top, will work, depending on the severity and nature of your problem or your fertilizing needs. Hope this helps a little.

I assume the crab has been cooked in some way before the shell is removed. Does anyone know how the shell is processed?

I doubt it's been processed. It's simply crushed crab and crab shell. Smells like it too. Ingredients: Crushed crab and crab shell.
