A True Beauty of a Book!
As a long-time fan and collector of comics, my pet peeve with many of the DC collections was that you could read the first 20 issues of Superman or Batman or Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Justice Society (All Star Comics), Justice League or pick a character (even The Seven Soldiers of Victory) in any number of forms. There's a Superman DC Archives; a Superman DC Chronicles; and then the Superman Omnibus. All three versions collected many of the same stories from the Golden age from the same years; most reprinted exactly the same stories although some editions had stories not in others; I kept asking is it worth the money for a couple extra stories. DC has covered the Golden Age pretty extensively; time and time again. But the real thing that was missing in all of these (and all of these series seemed to run out of collector steam before they could get there) were the post-war stories leading up to the Silver age; 1948-59 +/-). For a number of reasons, those stories are tough to find in any collection and what I have been waiting for. This Omnibus is the first to collect classic stories from that period (albeit a bit late) featuring the great art of Dick Sprang and Curt Swan. Anyone that grew up in the late 1950's to mid-1960's will see this as a nostalgic "blast from the past" with some really great art and whacky DC stories. Now... if only the other omnibus editions could just get to the same time period before they, too, cease publication.

I'm continually surprised by just how much I enjoy these fairly silly stories from the 1950s
I'm continually surprised by just how much I enjoy these fairly silly stories from the 1950s. Tired of modern DC angst and darkness? Go back to the good old days when Superman and Batman were friends, and the writing and plots could literally go anywhere. Highly recommended.

Good value, most stories good, some are OK
I think all of the stories collected here are the same ones that comprised the World Finest Archives Vol 1-3. Some of the stories are so-so. They did not work about continuity back then so you get to see at least three origin of the Batman & Robin/Superman team. Some real gems in here, too. The classic team of of Joker & Luther, for example. And the artwork, man Dick Sprang (aka the good Batman artist) really conveys the dynamism of the heroes and I don't know how to put this rightly, but really makes 1950's Gotham & Metropolis look like the way New York looks in say, North By Northwest. I know, kind of a silly thing to say, but since he drew this stuff in the 50's, so it should look like it, but he captures it. Definitely nice to have on the shelf, and considering what you get, not too expensive either.

Oldies but Goldies
A marvellous slice of history. These Golden Age stories have a charming innocence. Mind you I've had to join a gym to build up my arm muscles just to lift it.I'm really enjoying it.

A good reading
To be honest, I'm not always impressed by the way they wrote comics of that age, but I did enjoy that omnibus. It's not perfect, but I would recommend it.
