An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall & The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program DELUXE VERSION

Having been a fan of PHJB for a while, I was so glad to know their quality of music has not gone down one bit over time. This cd is perfection in every way. I think Ben Jaffe is taking them in a wonderful direction by bringing in modern day musicians to flavor this classic type of music. It is wonderful to see that the tradition is being carried on in such a delightful way. When I hear "St. James Infirmary" and "Louisiana Fairytale" being sung through a megaphone by Yim Yames it is amazing to think he is a folk-rock musician of today. I listen to this cd almost daily and am so glad I got it. It surpassed my expectations in sound and substance. PHJB keep up the great work!!

A must have album for a good cause.

Excellent music that moves you on a soul level.

A joyous compilation of some awfully talented people performing timeless music. Good-natured, diverse, and eminently enjoyable.

I've always loved Dixieland music - it's always so happy and uplifting. At first I was a little skeptical of the pairing of the PHJB with popular artists -- but it really works. Tom Waits, for example, seems perfectly at home with the sound, tempo, and mood. (And this was a particularly great value when it was offered for $5 a month or two ago! :-))

I could easily run out of superlatives describing the latest effort from the remarkable Preservation Hall Jazz Band. However, if you're reading this review then chances are you're about to pull the trigger and buy the album. Please do. You will not be disappointed. The song choices (and special guests) are outstanding, and the cause it benefits will ensure that this genre of music will be around for years to come. Special note for Tom Waits fans (like myself): Tom clearly loves New Orleans music. You can tell he's having fun on this one.

Great tunes, great performers, what more can you ask? This is very authentic American jazz in the Dixieland/blues style. Not to everyone's taste most likely. Sitting in on a session with these musicians would be great. If you can't do that, take a listen to this album.

6年前、まだハリケーン・カトリーナの被害に見舞われる遙か前の4月、ニューオルリンズは、暖かかった。バーボン・ストリートに面したホテルに宿を取り、夜に備えてプリザベーション・ホールの下見をしたっけ。何とも趣のある、水彩絵の具を染みこませたようなグリーンが買った淡い色彩のドアがものすごく印象的であった。大きな看板も何もなく、ただ、小さくジャズ・プリザベーションホールとどこかに書いてあっただけなので、うっかりすると、見過ごすところだった。そして、名物ガンボスープの夕食を食べ、ホールに向かった。入り口での入場料は、確か数ドルだったと記憶している。中はもう聴衆であふれかえっていた。そこでは、このＣＤに収録されている通りのニューオーリンズジャズが、数人のミュージシャンによって演奏されていたのだった。若い白人ミュージシャンもいたが、本当に大丈夫かと思うような黒人のおじいさん（失礼）の演奏に、何か、僕は厳かなモノを感じてしまったモノだ。女性のヴァイオリニストもいた。たくさんの人が文字通り立錐の余地なく、活熱心に聴き入っている。このホールは、残しておくべきだ。そう、心から思った。ハリケーンカトリーナからも、見事に復興したと聞く。是非また訪れてみたいスポットの一つである。さて、前書きが長くなったが、日本では知っている人は少なくはないが、持っている人のごく少ない本物のニューオーリンズジャズのＣＤである。本編ＣＤに19曲、ピ−ト・シーガーのヴォーカルが全編にわたって大きくフューチャーされているが、ご存じルイ・アームストロングが参加した曲＃９（オーバーダビングか？それとも同姓同名？）があるかと思えば、トム・ウエイツが歌っていたり＃３、テレンス・ブランチャードが参加していたり＃１９、実にヴァラエティーに富んだゲストとプリザベーション・ホール・ジャズバンドの作品集に仕上がって、聴き応え十分である。本物のニューオーリンズ・ジャズが堪能できるＣＤとして、超お勧めである。ブックレットの写真や解説も充実しており、なんとボーナスＣＤまで付いている！！（6曲収録）ジャズの伝統を大切に伝えようという心意気のぎっしり詰まった、志のあるアルバムである。売り上げは、ホールの運営にも当てられるらしい。めっけものです、ぜひ買って、そして聴いてください。

アメリカ最長の大河ミシシッピーが海になるルイジナア州ニューオルリンズ、ＪＡＺＺの発祥地として有名な街です。残念ながら大災害で街はもちろん地域全体も大きな被害をこうむりました。現在は復興されてほぼ昔の賑やかさを取り戻しているようです。タイトルのＰＲＥＳＥＲＶＡＴＩＯＮはニューオルリンズ市街のほぼ中心にあるバーボンストリートは交差する四つ角のそば昔何かの倉庫に使われていたものを改造した音楽ホールです。収容人員１２０名くらいのきわめてマイナーな小屋？で椅子も20人分くらい、トイレもありません。演奏者は元プロ、デキシーやや衰退の時代、自分たちの楽しみ半分で深夜25時くらいまで演奏しています。災害前は若いミュージシャンはいませんたみなさん60歳以上です。このＣＤはブリザベーション（現地ではプリザと発音しないようです）が懐かしく購入しました。手持ちのホール録音と比べると全く新しい吹き込みのようです。さらに若い女性ボーカルまで参加してデキシー復権にがんばっています。新しい曲が少し入っていますが、圧巻はボーナストラックの「セントジェームス病院」です。きわめて原曲にに近い演奏で、この一曲でデキシーＪＡＺＺの世界に引き戻されました。
