Good edition
This is the oldest story ever written down and preserved in human history. You may read this book and feel strange after. The story is ancient and the themes are both relevant and inspiring after several millennia.

Wonderful translation and insightful introduction
"The life that you seek you never will find: when the gods created mankind, death they dispensed to mankind, life they kept for themselves." The excellent translation and introduction by Andrew George presents to the modern reader the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh which dates back to 2000 BC. The epic and its verse translation preserve on the one hand the alienness of the ancient thought-world but show also that the question of mortality - one of the central questions of our being - is a historic invariant. While the content of the story is well known, this particular edition is a masterpiece in itself, proving not only the standard version of the epic, but also earlier Babylonian and Sumerian sources. Moreover the history of the reconstruction of the epic is clearly shown in the various tabletsThe appendix on the translation of the epic from the tablets is fascinating and awakes the desire to travel, discover and learn these ancient languages.
