I need a Brad nailer for 1&1/2 inch finish nails/brads for tin ceiling application?  Will this one work?

I have this Makita brad nailer and it works well and takes care of your needs. I believe Makita products are at the top of tools.  I have a large number of their produicts and have never had trouble with then.  One thing you need to do before you purchase too many boxes of brads/nails is to check the instructions from this Nailer and determine the proper gauge, length and what it is made of ( stainless steel).  There are a number if brand names that work just fine as long as they are made to fit the Makita AF505N brad nailer.  Good fun using the nailer.  Don Robertson,Midlothian, VA

Can it shoot 16 ga brads?

This is an 18 gauge nailer. It doesn't allow for other gauge brads. But it shoots the hell out of 18 2-inch. I finished a whole house of trim, cabinets, and what not.

Is this suitable for hardwood crown moldings ? Could this rive a brad through full 1 inch oak stair treads ? Some reviews suggest gun lacks power.

I have been driving brads through oak.  The gun seems to have enough power to handle it.  However, you may want to wait between shots.  I have been running my compressor at 120 psi.  Reading between the lines of your question, it seems you may be asking too much of the 23ga. brad to hold a stair tread or riser in place, unless you are gluing the pieces to substrates and just need a temporary attachment.  For crown moldings this will probably be alright if you use several brads to increase overall holding power.  Again for permanent installations, I would want to use glue as well as the brads.  These brads are headless and lack real holding power.  Their main advantage is that once they are in place, they are almost totally invisible and sanding and finishing can proceed without filling.  I like the gun for what it is designed for.  A single 23 ga 2" brad will not take the place of an 18ga nail.  I recently refinished the oak flooring in my living room and reinstalled the shoe mold with this nailer.  Finished with varnish.  No special effort to conceal the brads.  You have to really look for them.  For wooden members that do not move, this gun and brad system are fine.  Treads and risers will move and eventually loosen or pull away.  If brads don't completely drive, slow down and let the pressure rebuild especially with small single cylinder or pancake compressors.
