Q: Can the lid be used as a mixing surface too?

I use my palette specially for oil paint, so using the lid as mixing surface is perfect. Cleaning is not that easy and to open the case is quite hard, for is leaking proof. But it is a great tool anyway.

Q: Do you think it would function as well if I trimmed away the extra lip sticking out horizontally around the outside edge, to decrease the footprint?

Honestly I would not advise this. It's VERY difficult to open, it seals really well to keep the paint from getting loose in your kit. If you trimmed just that edge off, i might still close correctly, but you would not be able to get it open at all, or if you trimmed too much off it would not seal at all and you'd defeat the purpose of the palette.
