The pack of three means there are a total of three complete separate boxes of this product. Each of the three boxes contains a tube of die, the hair brush, plastic gloves and instructions. This three pack will enable you to die your hair three separate and complete times.

I have thin hair on the top, how likely is this to stain my scalp in a way that will show?

Like all hair color it can dye your scalp. Take a cotton swab and carefully apply vaseline to your scalp (avoiding hair as much as possible) before coloring. It's time consuming but you'll avoid the scalp staining. Good luck!
