I have to fasten 3 inch long bolts (5/16 head) into drywall/stud. Is this drill flute long enough to create a sufficient pilot holes?

Hmmm.... well, I would think if you anchored the shaft with the full 2 3/4 inch cutting screw exposed and sink it into the stud down to the chuck you might have a good pilot hole. The only thing that bothers me is that you said these are BOLTS not screws... so I don't know how much bite they will have to go that last 1/4 inch. so you may have to leave a bit of the shaft exposed to get the full 3" you will need. I hope that helps... hard to answer when I can't see what you are what you are working with. (I am a visual learner) ;) be safe and stay well.

Bosch CO2136 9/64 drill bit

The 5/64, 7/64 and 9/64 inch sizes are basic smaller drill bits. They are ones you are most likely to break in a bit set. So you will likely have to go shopping for replacements for broken bits in these sizes. I recommend the reasonably priced Dewalt DWA1205 and DWA1207 for the first two sizes and the Bosch CO2136 for the 9/64 inch. All are available from Amazon.
