ANSI Common LISP

ACL is to Common Lisp what K&R is to C. Despite its small size, this book packs a ton of information and includes ueful language/library references. The exercises are well conceived, and definitely worth completing. They reenforce previous chapters' content and therefore have a high didactic value. As a new-comer to Lisp from OO & imperative languages, I found this book indispensible for self-guided study and realizing what Common Lisp is about. I was amazed by Common Lisp's terse expressiveness, and the high level of abstraction that can be achieved with decreasing effort as one grasps it. Paul Graham's book is an absolute gem!

When I was in college I took a course that dealt primarily with Dr. Scheme. Ever since I've wanted to expand my knowledge on Lisp and boy, this did book deliver. It's a great addition to a programmer's library, and you will certainly learn a whole lot about it - though you should bear in mind that the author himself said if you already know the language it's a good reference book, but you're probably not going to learn anything new from it.As to the book itself, it's comfortably sized for one-handed reading, though the softcover makes it hard to place down on a table. Print is a bit off (top half of letters are a wee bit out of sync with the lower half) but the paper is good quality, and text is clear. It came a little bit roughed up, but perhaps that's due to its age. Great purchase in my opinion.

I wish I had this book at hand when I learned about computer programming. It is not only a book about how LISP works, but also a subtle philosophical work, without allude or outline something in this respect. In all aspects, a complete book about a launguage many are still considering obsolete, as myself used to be, with simple and less simple but interesting and instructive examples. Maybe someone must walk along the way this book takes by reading in conjunction "Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age". If French were to be the good-manner expressing language, then LISP is definitely the French of programming languages. Thank you, Mr. Paul Graham.

When I was first introduced to programming, it was to a LISP derivative for educational purposes. I've tried C, C++, Java, Javascript, I've become very proficient in the web markups, but LISP is the best for how I think and want to solve problems and this book is the best if you want to learn programming in an active, fun way.Paul Graham is an awesome author and I take every opportunity I can to cite him, his book(s), essays in my college papers. Maybe one day someone will get the message and make a class about LISP so I can take it and be entirely justified in stating that everything that this book is about is AWESOME.

I have been wanting to learn a functional language for a while. Common Lisp seemed like the obvious choice because of it's rich features. Reading through this book and working the exercises really teaches you how to "think in lisp". I highly recommend this text to anyone wanting to delve into functional programming.

Book was in very good condition, and a whole lot cheaper than new. It was a gift for my son and he specified it, so I know he liked it!

This book is a very good introduction to Lisp, as others have adequately explained. However, since it was first published the quantity of good free Lisp reading material on the web has increased. See <u>Practical Common Lisp</u> ([...]) as an example. The $47 expenditure might not be necessary if you just want to learn lisp.My main complaint is the binding on the book. I have not put this book under any unusual stress and the spine is already starting to fall apart after a few weeks of use. This unacceptable for reference book that I would like to use well into the future.

LISP is a very powerful programming language and this book about a variation of LISP - Common LISP - is a great manual how to utilize the language to its fullest! Recommend learning LISP to every programmer even if you don't plan on using it for commercial projects.

ANSI Common LISP explains the details of LISP. While it is not as nice to read as some of the less language and more problem oriented books such as Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming: Case Studies in Common Lisp, Land of Lisp: Learn to Program Lisp, One Game at a Time!: Learn to Program in Lisp, One Game at a Time! it excels because it covers a much wider range of LISP features.Great book for an even greater language. I wouldn't recommend this for somebody who wants to learn what LISP is all about. For that I would recommed Land of LISP as it outlines the beauty (and difficulty) of LISP much better. But that's not what this is all about.

Un buen libro, aunque no abunden los ejemplos. Bueno como libro de consulta, pero no para aprender Lisp. Me sirve para refrescar conocimientos olvidados (yo dejé el Lisp hace 25 años, y ahora lo he tenido que retomar).

This was a really helpful book it helped me understand Lisp so that I could pass my AI module at University.
