Deployment and stowing needs to be easy with a gloved hand
I purchased this knife because I was looking to add another knife to my "collection" that had a different locking mechanism. All of my knives that I consider "EDC" or "Work" knives I need to be able to deploy AND close with one hand. I'm a telecommunication's lineman and often find myself needing to cut vines or branches out of my way while climbing (with spikes) a telephone pole. Deployment and stowing needs to be easy with a gloved hand.* Most of my knives are frame lock or liner lock, except for my Benchmade Griptilian. I didn't feel like spending the money a Benchmade would require, but didn't want to go very cheep. I'm not a big fan of Piston Locks, because I fear accidental release of the lock during hard use, so that left me with the Arc-Lock which for all intents and purposes is the same as the Axis Lock from benchmade. Out of all of the SOG knives with the Arc Lock, this is the one that stood out as being most practical. The Arc Lock works. That's about all I can say. It's sturdy, smooth, and ambidextrous. I wish more knives had the Arc Lock or Axis lock. I've never had an issue with either knife lock failing me. And honestly, if you're worried about it failing you, you either need to buy a fixed blade knife or figure out what tool you should actually be using for the job at hand. Because at that point, you're working outside the design of the knife. I've never had issues with liner locks or frame locks, either. I have been cut, and have a nasty scar on my index finger because a Lock-Back knife with no choil close on my hand. But that was an extremely cheep knife and I was working outside the design of the knife. Lesson learned at a young age. While I have many knives with American Tanto blades (mostly Emerson Knives), I prefer Drop Point or Spear point blades because of ease of sharpening. Sharpening a tanto is literally sharpening 2 different blades. This blade is a Drop Point which features a slight recurve. I wish the recurve wasn't there, because it would make sharpening that much easier, but it's a rather shallow recurve, so it's doesn't change sharpening much. However, it does enhance it's "pull cutting" ability quite a bit. I'm a big fan of the blade geometry of this knife. The blade is VG10 steel, which is one of my favorite steels for generalized tasks and EDC use. It's very similar in performance to 154CM, except it is slightly more corrosion resistant. It takes a great edge, holds the edge pretty well, and is moderately tough. It tends to be a little more prone to chipping compared to 154CM, but is also a little easier to sharpen (154CM is a pretty easy steel to sharpen for someone who's experienced, and is moderately time consuming for someone who isn't). All of my 154CM blades are coated, so corrosion resistance isn't a big issue. And I grew up with 1095 blades, so I tend to keep a thin layer of oil on my blades regardless of the steel. VG10 and 154CM fall in the middle of the pack as far as steels are concerned and is where I think you find the best value for your money, ease of sharpening, edge retention, and toughness. The grip is nice, and I find it very ergonomic. Some reviewers complain about the finger groves (and I normally do), but they fit my hand almost perfectly on this knife. My only complaint is the grip material. I prefer medium grit G10, which for me does not feel brittle, has enough grip for when you're hands are sweaty/muddy/bloody but is not overly aggressive. I find the texture almost overly aggressive and may sand it down slightly on the clip side. This knife is relatively thick compared to other knives I carry. While it does take up more room in the pocket, I find the extra beef to the handle makes it easier to hold and more confident. It's not entirely a con, but I feel they could have slimmed it slightly down. I don't find the knife overly heavy, and I don't notice the weight difference between this knife in my pocket and an Emerson CQC-7BW (which is my most commonly carried knife). The biggest con is the flipper. The geometry of the flipper does not lend to quick opening of the blade with the flipper. In fact, I MUST use my wrist to open the knife with the flipper. I find the thumb studs actually deploy the blade quicker, but at least I have the option for flipper deployment. You can also deploy the knife by holding the arc lock in the "open" position and using the same wrist action. I did not buy this knife because it has a flipper, though. So I don't really care. And the flipper DOES act as a protective choil, so it does have some value added.Over all, this is a nice knife for the cost and I definitely recommend it to anyone considering it.

The Last EDC I'm Getting
After going through some other brands of higher end knives and having issues with them, I decided to give this very utilitarian approach to the pocket knife a go. None of the other knives were near as solid as this one, and the blade is extra thick which inspires confidence that it can take a beating.I wasn't sold on the ARC lock after seeing some tests of other SOGs with it, but I have to say that this one feels incredibly sturdy. While the test isn't exactly scientific, I have tried very very hard (with a glove, of course) to fail the lock just to be sure but it came out a champion. I can't imagine putting enough weight on the lock to break it, and by all means this is probably the next best thing to a fixed blade (or the axis lock). Also I emailed SOG about a black pocket clip and they immediately put in a request to send me one for free, which is awesome. If you're worried about it snagging, it is very easy to bend the end of the clip toward the knife a little bit. I have yet to snag it on anything at all.Not that it needs to be mentioned, but mine came extremely sharp and cuts with ease. It sharpens easily and retains an extremely sharp edge for a long time. The thick VG-10 seems like it would pry well in a pinch, though I haven't tried it and probably won't.The handle material feels really good, and I actually prefer it over G10 in most circumstances. The texture makes it easy to grip and it just plain feels solid and high-end.Overall I really like the way this knife feels and will probably not buy another EDC for many years to come. I honestly don't see how it could get any better than this blade for my wants and needs.

Beautiful knife!
I just received this in the mail today and I have to say I already love it. I currently own a Benchmade 950 Rift and a SOG Trident Mini as my EDC's. I got the Trident as my first folder and I was very satisfied with it even for a $50 knife. After that, I wanted something a littler nicer so I got the Benchmade at an employee discount for $100. I've been using my Rift for over a year and I believe the Vulcan is very comparable to it. Benchmade makes some pretty expensive knives and the Rift retails for about $165 on Amazon and I got the Vulcan for around $100.The action between the SOG and Benchmade seem very similar. The Arc and Axis lock mechanisms are both great and I've always loved these style of knives. There's added safety and security as opposed to typical liner locks. The action on the Vulcan is extremely smooth and I like the addition of the flipper. I am a little disappointed that I can't use the flipper exclusively. The problem is that this is not a spring assisted knife so you must use some momentum along with the flipper in order to open it.It also came razor sharp. I opened a package I received and it cut it open like butter. I just hope it can stay this sharp. Either way, I do have a Spyderco sharpening set to keep it sharp. I recommend this knife to anyone looking for a good EDC, but doesn't want to spend too much for something like a Benchmade.

Exactly what i expected. A great knife
I got mine recently at around $90. I loved this knife immediately right after opening the box. Normally I don't even write reviews on them, but this one was more pricey so i figured it would help others as it did for myself. It's a fantastic knife, razor sharp out of the box. Some may argue about the handle's material quality, but that is because they don't understand it would be much harder to make that shape out of other materials, as I have read. And it makes it very lightweight, which is a big plus. The blade quality is amazing and very strong. Mine so far has zero defects and opens and closes smooth as can be, no blade movement at all. Any other bad reports/reviews probably just got their item damaged or just in bad condition by rare chance. It has now become my new every day carry (EDC), replacing my "Jim Wagner Reality Based Blade" knife. I absolutely love it.

Perfect platform for hard-to-find items. Delivery was prompt.
The General Electric M61A1 Vulcan is a 6-barrel 20mm cannon of the gatling-type. It fires standard M50 ammunition at 6,000 rounds per minute and is integral part of the armament of modern fighters such as the F-15, F-18 and of course the F-16. Our Vulcan is also formidable with a powerful strength of construction. There is nothing weak about the Vulcan. Take for instance our patented Arc-Lock. Or, the full steel liners encased in glass reinforced Zytel handles. The blade is a full .125\" thick with spear point shape and includes our new kick deployment of the blade. Press on the back of the blade and the knife comes out fast. Reversible clip, Arc-Lock, and double thumb studs make for complete ambidextrous use.
