Are the sizes listed the actual size? is an 8 x 10 really 8 x 10 or is it 7 1/2 x 9 1/2?

It is actually 8 x 10. I had to trim it to properly fit under my 8 x 10 rug, which was not difficult.

Witch side is the top?

I have the 8’x10’ and it is definitely different on both sides… there is a “softer” side and then the side with the “fine mesh” as another customer stated. Because I just received it and am placing it on hardwood floors I will have to decide how to lay it.

Does this pad help prevent rug burn on the knees?

The pad has nothing to do with rug burn the fiber of your rug is what gives you the rug burn and how hard you rub against it. It gives some padding but if your rug is of a bristled texture the padding can not stop the abrasion to the skin.
