Damsels in Distress: Biblical Solutions for Problems Women Face

Twice a month, I gather with some ladies from our church to read aloud and discuss a book. We just completed Martha Peace's book, Damsels in Distress. It has been a great study!The last chapter focused on responding biblically to trials and I found myself examining the various trials I've experienced in my life and whether or not I've always responded to them in a godly way. To my shame, I determined that I am often a great big failure at trials; thankfully God uses them in my life anyway. :-)And that's the point. Mrs. Peace points out that trials may initially bring out the worst in us: anger, bitterness, fear, laziness, self-focus, etc. And isn't that the truth? Our first reaction to stress or tribulation may expose hidden sin that needs to be purged, as the "worst in us" is revealed.Yet, as Mrs. Peace points out, God uses conflict and trials to expose and show us our sin, prune it off, and grow in us the precious fruit of righteousness:"But thankfully, this 'worst' is pruned off as God convicts us of our sin and helps us turn from sin to righteousness. The pain from God's pruning will fade as the fruit of righteousness flowers for all to see." - Martha PeaceAll the chapters were good and included many topics relevent to women. Topics like PMS, gossip and slander, manipulation, vanity, and legalism. Mrs. Peace teaches from a Reformed perspective and is doctrinally sound. I highly recommend this book for personal or group study.

I like that the author doesn't mince her words. This kind of biblical truth is needed now more than ever. This would be a good book for a women's Bible study group or to keep on hand as a supplement when counselling or lending support to other women.

I was not impressed with this book as much as I wanted to be. I had hoped for a researched discussion of the lives and times of the various women in the Bible as they pertained to the problems women face today.Instead this is a good devotional book, set up so one can read one person a day as a worshp segment. Although the book is good for what it is set up to be, it is not the research book I had thought I was buying.For those who want a good Women's Devotional book lightly discussing various women in the Bible, this is a good book. If one wants a deeper look at these women as they pertain to today's problems there are better books out there for that.

This book seemed promising when I bought it but ended up being a disappointment. The "women's issues" were pretty basic, covering issues with others (gossip, emotional dependance, manipulating, and hurt feelings) issues with self (vanity, PMS, legalism) and issues with the world (feminism, role of women in church, and hardship). Each chapter was set up beginning with a story or illustration, define and list related verse, how you should respond, and concluding with a summary and study questions. There really was not a lot strategy or how we should respond, but even if there had been more I would have been disappointed, because the issues Peace decided to include seem to miss the mark of the real heart problems of modern Christians. I would have loved to see a section on healthy marriage, discipleship of newer or younger Christians, or abuse. Instead this felt like a somewhat shallow dip into several semi related topics.I'll also admit that I disagree with several interpretations of Ms. Peace, for example her understanding of what a woman's life purpose is (marriage / family).

This is definitely THE best book that I have read in a long time! She brings the rubber down to meet the road and doesn't let up!! I've been saved for 40 years and she brought out truths from God's word that I never knew ... and ones that would have saved me a lot of heartache and stress! This book is a MUST for EVERY Christian lady and ladies Bible study!!! I can't wait to start applying the Biblical principles she has set forth in this book to my personal and allowing God to be glorified through me!!

This was a book used in my small group. It was easy to read/understand with many points of biblical application.

Great Biblical principles for struggles women experience. Will read it over and over.

The book was in excellent shape. I was surprised at how quickly I received it!! Most gratifying. It is an excellent study - my sister-in-law and I are really enjoying doing this study. It sometimes steps on our toes, but that's what is needed!

Well written and recommended for group study.
