Can you take these through airport security? Or would they be confiscated like an ordinary corkscrew?

I can confirm that one was confiscated from my bag in FRA when going through security for a connecting flight. However, YMMV as I was able to get it aboard the first flight....

My cork puller arrived with grease on the prongs. Should that be cleaned off, or has it been applied to aid insertion?

Mine arrived with grease. It's not very visible, but you can feel it, so perhaps the others didn't observe it. According to a German website the grease is intentional and they suggest replenishing form time to time, "The steel prongs are factory-wise treated with a foodfriendly grease and should be lubricated again from time to time with a drop of cooking oil. Please wipe Ah-So dry after every use."

What is the material of the cover/slid that slips over the prongs ?

The cover is metal. Might be stainless steel
