The cassette player does not work. Press "play" and tape jams in mechanism.
I disliked the inoperative cassette mechanism. I purchased this item, the finest boombox of it's manufacturing years, expressly for the tape player. In the 90s I purchased 5 of these Panasonic gems, one after another, and they would play beautifully for about two years then the mechanism would break down. It had not occurred to me when I found the RX-FS470 online that perhaps something that was manufactured two decades ago might experience "rubber rot" since it was made. I am not an electronics mechanic. I would like to amend my mistake with a working cassette player, perhaps something tested and approved before it appears online. In the nineties these boomboxes would always cost a hundred dollars new. I imagine that a working model would cost what I paid for a model that doesn't work. The radio works fine, I don't listen to radio. I have one of the finest cassette collections on earth and I need a machine, an excellent machine, to play them on. Aloha.

I picked one out of the garbage 12 years ago and the radio is still going strong. The sound is better than anything comparable today. The cassette player pooped out only because it was foolishly left out in the elements but when it worked, it really worked. Just picked up a new used one from an Amazon seller today and I hope it's as good as the one from the trash. Special bonus: ANALOG INTERFACE!

The best boombox cassette tape player / recorder and AM / ...
The best boombox cassette tape player / recorder and AM / FM ever made, with sound quality and clarity nearly equal to a large home stereo. The secret is in the graphic equalizer on these newer models -- look for it on the top left side. (Models RX-FS 450 - 470.) New is best because these units tend to wear with long use. For longest life, the unit should be placed on a solid surface (a table), and each key should be carefully pressed straight down.People are amazed at the clarity of sound and separation of instrument sounds this unit delivers when playing music from a quality orchestra. For best recordings, metal bias tape (Type IV cassette tape, called "metal tape") will deliver the clearest recordings that are free of background "hiss."
