Review: A must read for anyone interested in dystopian ideas - Not for the faint hearted, particularly the torture part of the book in Room 101. could not put the book down, and was gripped the whole of the way through. It certainly appears to be prophetic and we're seeing some of the Big Brother playing out today. Review: great - good book

One of the most important books in the English language. A great read too.
This book should be required reading in all schools. We did so at my school in the 1970's. It is eerily prophetic. The author's true name was Eric Blair (Orwell was his pen-name).

Still relevant in 2021 for its insights into tyranny, but the writing style and story is dated
Timeless insight into the workings of authoritarian tyranny, but not a great or entertaining read due to its dated style

Readers of the novel prior to 1984 probably let out a sigh of relief when that year came and passed and George Orwell's dystopian world had failed to materialize. Of course, there were certain signs and worries - television consuming many hours of "free" time, wars "Oceania" carried out in Vietnam or by "Eurasia" in Afghanistan, in my own country Sweden a build-up of a nanny state for citizens outlawing alternatives for state television or state child care - but if anything people reacted to this in growing protest guiding the future in another direction. But Big Brother is cunning: Instead of appearing in the form of an omnipresent party, he now appears disguised as the ultimate freedom fighter - the Internet. The party is replaced by 4-5 dominant companies, and they eat inside people's minds just as effectively as the party's telescreens or terror threats. Reading it after witnessing the American insurrection of January 6 and the continuous peddling of lies about electoral fraud which, despite any factual evidence, is gaining traction and influence in is an amazing testimony of George Orwell's insight into the human mind - it's fallacies and ease of being impressed. His description of the use of war, and investment in weapons, as a way of oppressing people by shifting GNP into destructive powers is a masterpiece of its own. Highly recommended for anyone wondering where the age of Internet will land - could land - if we are not careful and stand up for what was believed to be principles of truth, logic, and human feelings, or in short what we used to think defined us humans. Big Brother - Donald Trump. Shattering!
