Looks and feels solid, haven't tested it in a fire.
Looks and feels very heavy/sturdy. Haven't tested it in a fire (hope I don't have to, obviously). Room to fit 8.5 x 11" documents without folding, which is very nice. Must be stored horizontally to be effective (according to the instructions). Comes with two keys. Probably wouldn't be great strictly for privacy applications since you could most likely break the handle and/or lock fairly easily if you really wanted to, but that's okay because it's just supposed to provide protection from fire and water. I don't know if it's ultimately a five-star product or not (that would depend on how it performs in a fire), but I have no complaints thus far and I'm going with the "innocent until proven guilty" style of rating. Would buy again.---Update--- After a few months of storing documents inside this thing, I have encountered a common problem among users: paper becomes damp and moldy. My documents were not ruined, but they felt slightly damp whenever I opened the safe, and some cash I put in there was starting to grow brown mold. I'm not sure why this is (lack of air circulation, maybe?), but the company is aware of the problem and will give you free desiccants (silica gel packets) to soak up the moisture. All you have to do is call them and ask. I got my free silica gel packets in the mail a few weeks ago (they sent several big ones), and threw them in the safe. Now my documents feel nice and dry, and I'm no longer worried that they're going to get ruined by moisture/mold. A smart response by the company to an otherwise annoying problem!

Feels Solid and well worth the price
I bought this to be placed inside my gun safe to give my paper products extra fire resistance. It feels solid and easily accommodates full size documents and cash. For the money it seems like a great deal especially with free shipping considering it weighs close to 20 lbs. Granted it's not my gun safe but didn't cost thousands either. I can't comment on the locks as that is a non issue for me as I only wanted more security in case of a fire. If you want security you are going to have to pay to play as the saying goes. How hard would it be to break in with a crowbar or pry it off the floor and carry it out the door. If you want security you have to go big. IF you want some good fire protection put it in your freezer and it should make it through a fire.

That's actually one of the things I like about this box is that you use the key ...
It's a lockbox that locks. Or not. That's actually one of the things I like about this box is that you use the key only if you lock it. Without locking it, the box just latches close. That's usually fine for everyday use. I bought it primarily as a fireproof storage container for documents and other small items. It accomplishes that at a reasonable price. The handle is convenient if you need to move it, but usually the box stays in place and fits under the bed.

Sturdy Security Chest but Small Size Issue
This is a very sturdy, well-made security chest made by one of the most trusted names in the industry. It's heavy, which is good. However you're not going to want to put this high up on a shelf if you have to get it down for any reason fairly regularly. The latching system is particularly impressive, and I can see how it is not only fireproof but waterproof as well. It comes with two keys, but First Alert offers a way to get a replacement if for some reason you lost both of them. My only issue is the stated size. It says it will fit an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper unfolded. Well, not quite. Sheets will not lie completely flat inside the chest. A small amount of the edges will necessarily curve upward. This is because the bottom is not completely flat, but has a small radius curve all the way around. I'm sure this has to do with the fire and water seal, but it was a bit disappointing since one of the main reasons I went with this was to not have to fold papers placed inside. I still don't have to, but they are going to get a bit of a curl over time.

At first glance, this appeared to be a wonderful solution for protecting important papers and cash in the event of fire. As others have noted, however, mildew is a major, major problem with this unit. It seems that the waterproof seal does such a good job of making the box airtight that even the slightest amount of moisture whatsoever inside the unit will multiply quickly into damp, smelly mildew. And I'm talking about even the moisture from a human hand.We tried everything in the world to prevent mildew from forming. Before placing items in the box, we insured their moisture-free condition by drying them in a warm oven and then wearing latex gloves to place them in the box. Didn't work. We dumped baking soda in the box. Again, no good. We scattered a bag of silica gel in the box. Again, mildew formed quickly. Finally, we got rid of the box and voilà: no more mildew! This firebox seems like a great idea and appears sturdy and well built, but mildew issues make it impractical for storing anything except moldy cheese.Edit (added 1/7/2011): Rather than wasting money on this piece of trash, do an Amazon search for SentrySafe. The make products similar to those of First Alert for about the same amount of money but apparently don't have the mildew and mold issues that this unit has. Reviewer ratings strongly suggest as much.

I loved the variety of products available. Will definitely shop again.
The First Alert 2017F 0.19 Cubic Foot Fire and Water Chest is conveniently sized to store letter sized documents lying flat. The 2017F is a UL classified fire protection tested to withstand an external temperature up to 1550 Degrees for 1/2 hour. Most residential fires last less than 30 minutes so the 2017F is a good choice for a small document and electronic media protection solution. In addition to the UL testing, the 2017F has also been independently verified to protect digital media, such as memory sticks, CDs, DVDs and external hard drives, in a fire. The waterproof seal on the 2017F enables the chest to float during a flood, making it easy to locate, as well as providing protection from the flood water. The 2017F includes a convenient carry handle and is secured by a clamping style latch with key lock. The safe is covered by a 5 year manufacturer's warranty and will be replaced free of charge if damaged in a fire.
