Very disappointed with the performance of this product
Very disappointed with the performance of this product. Also that I have to foot the bill for shipping this back to Seagate, what a farce. The drive lasted only 4 weeks before issues started happening, I would go into a folder of images and find that some of my RAW files or JPEGS were unreadable and then I started getting errors saying the drive was corrupt. I have other drives that were working, only this one was causing the issues. Editing images that were on the drive rendered my whole PC unusable. Customer help at SEAGATE initially blames me using Win XP as the issue (I don't, I have windows 7 and it's a fresh install, not an upgrade) Then it was possibly some other piece of hardware to blame, yet all the other drives worked. Eventually, they said I could return it for a free replacement, (yep I'm having to pay the postage and I already paid over £100 for the drive) so I hardly think it's a free replacement. When trying to clear the folders that are already on the drive, it won't even let me delete those so information that should be private will now be in the hands of SEAGATE.

Usable, but some functiuonality has been stripped for no obvious reason
Cons:1. All power management functionality is off. The OS cannot shut it down, set any power management values. It is always on and you can feel that it is spinning inside so it does not have any "internal" black box power management.2. As is, it gets too warm for my liking. It is impossible to interrogate it what is its own idea of temperature inside because it refuses both ATA and SMART commands for that. All in all, it needs a set of rubber feet (I used spares from an old Raspberry Pi kit) to lift it off the desk surface so it cools properly. As a result of 1+2 I do not expect it to be particularly reliable.Pros:Fast, virtually silent and has the capacity advertised.

Good Drive but bad UX for Unplugging it
Device is stable, easy to set up (i.e. device plug and install Paragon driver) and well built! That said, the Toolkit and paragon NTFS driver for mac, which is your client side (i.e. actually on your computer) software does not provide a good User Experience for removing the device. The documentation also misleads by omission on how to unplug the device and detach it safely from your mac after a mirror. You can chose a) the Eject Button from the Toolkit software (Wrong, you will need to recreate your mirror). You can chose b) the Eject button on Finder (Macs version of File Explorer for windows) to eject the device before removing the physical cable (Wrong, you will need to recreate your mirror). Both options a and b just execute without any warning message, auto unmounting of the drive or any other cautionary warning to the user on the fact that their mirror is not properly shutdown and the eject button will essentially ruin a still running mirror on your computer with the device. Finally, you can correctly chose option c), the 'Unmount' button on the NTFS software (Paragon NTFS Driver for mac). This will unmount your drive from memory making it safe to remove your drive physically from your mac ONLY after you check finder to ensure it is still not been registered by your mac as been linked. Documentation linked to the Toolkit by url link does not provide this guidance ergo my downed rating. Given the device's stability, the simple design for accessing your files on the device and the login process of simply plugging it in and firing up your NTFS Paragon software from your Launch icon on your mac, its a shame that these UX aspects are overlooked. IF Seagate were able to upgrade their Paragon software to check for an unmounted drive BEFORE ejecting the drive and do the same from Finder, then provide a cautionary note or unmount the drive BEFORE executing the ejection, I could see my rating move to 4 maybe 5 stars depending on how it performs over time (which I suspect will be good).

Strong - Review updated in January 2021
A very reliable hard drive.I was about to return the hard drive, I wanted to connect to a router, to use as a personal cloud.Unfortunately the router does not recognize the 4TB, you have to use a computer and partition the hard drive into 2 partitions of 2TB each.Do not use the format function of your router, if you use that function the router corrupts the file system of the disk.Use a computer for this function. At this moment everything works very well.Review updated in January 2021Unfortunately I have to change my Review in this month of January 2021.The disk stopped working for no reason. This hard drive has not had a hit.If you are looking for a reliable external hard drive for your backups, I do not recommend this one.
