The Rise and Decline of the Medici Bank: 1397-1494

This is the definitive work on the Medici bank, and (I have read) among the finest works on medieval banking in existence. Dense, authoritative and exhaustively detailed it is, an enjoyable read, however it isn't, though I suspect that Prof. de Roover never fancied himself as an airport paperback novelist; this is an academic treatise, after all. A working knowledge of the Medici family from Giovanni di Bicci to Piero the Unfortunate is helpful (and I would be amazed if anyone buying this book didn't already have a specific interest in the period). I found myself skipping through some of the many balance sheets and such like without (I felt) taking away from the experience. Certainly the go-to book on the subject, though.
