Red yeast rice is a natural product that has been used by Asian traditional herbalists since approximately 800 A.D. Produced by fermenting red yeast (Monascus purpureus) with white rice, red yeast rice is commonly used in cooking applications to enhance the color and flavor of foods. Peking duck is an example of the coloration and flavor imparted by red yeast rice. NOW® Red Yeast Rice is carefully produced to avoid the presence of citrinin, an unwanted by-product of the fermentation process.

Seems to work very well
I used this product along with two other NOW supplements, the recommended CoQ10 and Beta-Sitosterol Plant Sterols. The reason I tried these was because my blood test came back showing several concerns including high cholesterol, blood sugar and uric acid. My total cholesterol was 222, HDL of 35, LDL 145 and triglyceride of 211.I cut out as much sugar as possible in my diet, cut the carb and processed foods as much as possible, and tried to walk every day. This was very helpful as in about three months' time I lost 50 LBS and felt much better. The cholesterol test done at that time was also much improved. My total cholesterol dropped to 204, HDL of 37, LDL to 140 and triglyceride of 136. However, I knew it could still be better. So I continued on the same diet and exercise and started taking these supplements. No other supplements were used but I do have a Glucomannan/psyllium husk drink twice a day as described in this Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucomannan.The next test was 6 months later and came back with stellar results. My total cholesterol dropped to 146, HDL improved to 49, LDL was down to 85 and triglyceride down to 62. I also dropped another 25lbs.I cannot say the drastic reduction was due to these supplements as I'm sure the continued diet corrections, exercise and weight loss were contributing and significant factors. However, I'm very happy with the results (and I also went from a 10.4 A1C to a 5.3 A1C and Uric Acid dropped 3.6 mg/dl).At this point, I'm at an acceptable weight and fitness/health level and I'm going to stop these supplements but keep everything else the same and see how it goes. While it would be nice to be able to know exactly how much, if any, these helped, I'm very happy with my cholesterol numbers after using the Red Bean Rice, CoQ10 and Beta-Sitosterol Plant Sterols.

This stuff works to lower cholesterol
I have elevated cholesterol levels due to a family history combined with hypothyroidism. My LDL cholesterol level was 218 in October 2016 when I started taking one 1200mg caplet of red yeast rice extract twice daily, one at noon and another at bedtime, always with a meal or snack. Along with the red yeast rice extract, I also took time release niacin 1000mg (two 500mg caplets) every night with a meal or snack.By the end of December 2016 my LDL had decreased to 152. This represented a 66-point drop in a little more than two months. So far I am pleased with the red yeast rice extract supplement. By the way, my HDL level is 112, up from the 90s range. Since niacin also has cholesterol-lowering properties, I cannot be completely sure which of the two supplements caused the positive changes in my cholesterol profile.Prescription statin medications such as Pravastatin (Pravachol) and Rosuvastatin (Crestor) result in awful side effects such as muscle pain that makes it too difficult for me to walk. The niacin/red yeast rice combo does not result in the muscle pain side effect, and my liver function tests are normal. I will continue to take these supplements as long as they continue to work.

(Not much exercise other than normal walking at work and around home) I work from home also so not much walking around. I am trying to get out more and exercise as well.In the last 18 days I began taking CoQ10 (NOW). During the entire time I was also taking Garlic, Ginger, Dandelion root, boiled cabbage juice, I was also raw juicing 1-2 a week (celery, beets, ginger, carrots nothing controlled just various vegetables). I cut out sugar, bread, I did eat Whole Grain a few times during the 85 days. I ate meat maybe 1-2 times the entire 85 days as well. (I also stopped eating meat in Oct 2014 but in March shows my results were dangerously high still (no exercise neither)). I was also taking Swiss Kriss 1-2 pills daily or as needed. I also was taking Alaskan fish oil (2 a day) from Wholefoods.Dosage: RYR-1200mg x3 times a day breakfast, midday, before bed.I only drank water, herbal tea, (lots of Dandelion tea, Skin Detox (yogi)), lots of other detox herbal teas) I did drink coffee maybe 4-5 times in the 85 days, I am not addicted to coffee so that was nice to help increase detox strengths.) During the 85 days I also took Milk Thistle, Licorice and Marshmallow Root for about 40 days of the 85 days.Hope this helps someone in detail to get your numbers down and get you feeling better! (Dr. wanting me on Statins) I read all the side effects and scared my pants off, not to mention the price tag for a bottle of that crazy stuff). I Read (Red) Yeast Rice was a no brainer for me and I dropped over 123 Points in Cholesterol alone (292 to 169) <200.
