Interesting Smokey smell....
I've used raw, unrefined shea butter before so I am familiar with how it looks feels etc. This is a very smooth product - it is quickly absorbed and doesnt have the grainy feel that other products I've used sometimes have. I was initially bummed when I went outside and found my package soaked by rain - but this was so well packaged that was fine. The cardboard box comes sealed in packing tape and there is foil and plastic on the top of the little container. ... which is issue #2 - do note the size! This is a VERY small jar. I was quite surprised at how small it is.But the biggest issue is the smell. I've Never had a shea product arrive with a smokey smell. And, while its been 30years since I've last smelled pot, that is what this smell reminds me of!! Its quite strong- and it lasts. I do have some arthritis in my hands so maybe I'll get a little lucky and this will help that - it does say Therapeutic right??? But I was actually going go let my daughter have this at school and I think that I'll pass on that!!! LOLI'm not sure if I should be giving it 6 stars for a bonus ingredient or 2 stars for a smokey one - I'll settle for 3 and update if it ends up having any effect on my arthritis.

Poorly Packaged, Burned Shea Butter
Shea Butter is notoriously easily burned. Greenwood Essential Organic African Shea Butter has a very strong smoky flavor that I can smell as I type on my computer after applying only a very small amount to the back of my both my hands. I do not know if burning hinders the function of shea butter. I found that Greenwood Essential Organic African Shea Butter is as hydrating and spreads as well as well as shea butter that I used previously. But the smell is so strong, that I won't use it anywhere closer to my nose, like my hair or face; I will use it on my hands, even though it’s still a bit smelly there. Otherwise, I would feel that I’ve just come back from a campfire.I wasn't impressed with the packaging. There’s a lot of blank space on the label, but they used such tiny fonts that I could not read the back of the bottle without a magnifying glass (Batch number, Net volume etc.) Nothing is printed on the bottom of the bottle. The "Outer box" was a rather trashy looking cardboard box covered with craft tape, and the label print was worn off at the time of delivery. I don't think you’ll want to save the box; I don't know why they would place the label there, and not on the jar itself. The lid of the product is easily dented. It says the product is packaged in India.I have no idea why there's a red "Canadian" maple leaf on the front of the bottle, but it seems to have nothing to do with it's country of origin.

Smells Like Cigarettes; Small Container
I have been using raw and unrefined shea butter for almost a decade now and am very familiar with what it should smell like, look like, and I am also quite versed on the average going rates at which the high quality butters typically go for. I was excited to give this brand a try because I have never tried it before. (I have tried quite a variety because I make personal care products with it and also use it as a message oil.)This one was a disappointment.First of all the container is very small for the price it is being sold for. I was surprised when I first received it because I was expecting to receive a larger container, judging on what I'm used to paying. Normally, I could overlook the price if what I was receiving was a very high quality product but this one is not, sadly.I do like the texture and thick consistency of this, however. It spreads far and a little goes a long way, as is typical with shea butter.Unfortunately, what really set my rating over the edge was that this smells like straight up cigarette smoke. This is probably due to over processing. The colour is also a little more dark compared to the more high quality butters I am used to using, which is another sign of something going awry in the packaging or processing process. In conclusion, I feel this isn't the best bang for the buck, as far as quality is concerned, and I don't really want to use it because it makes me smell like a smoke when I put it on.

excellent moisturizer
I love this organic unrefined African Shea butter. It is packaged perfectly in a little tub with a lid. It’s easy to scoop out. It is fresh. I love using this for my own homemade lotions and salves. I took off one star because the tub comes in a cardboard box which is completely taped over with brown tape so you can’t read the label. So I don’t have any information on the manufacturing date, expiration date or the batch number.

Moisturizes Nicely
This is the first time I have used African shea butter. I removed the seal on the jar, and was immediately hit with a woodsy, campfire smoke kind of smell that was actually pleasantly exotic. The shea butter itself is a light golden yellow, an indicator that it is unrefined, as advertised. The shea butter was creamy and easy to remove from the jar. I rubbed some into my hands and also on my forearms, both of which were very dry. The shea butter spread easily on my skin and absorbed with a couple of minutes, leaving my skin feeling soft and smooth, but not greasy. Instructions on the label say to store the container in a cool, dry place and to always keep the lid closed. It says it expires 18 months after the date of packaging. It says to "see outer pack/back of bottle" for the batch number, net volume, and manufacturing date. Unfortunately, this information is not on the bottle, and the box that it came in was completely covered with non-transparent packaging tape. If anything was written on the box, I could not read it through the tape and no writing survived the tape removal. Therefore, I have no idea if this product is expired or not. However, it immediately softened and moisturized my skin, and I am very happy with its performance, so I don't consider not knowing the manufacturing date a deal breaker.
