how to use rubber stopper

You install the rubber stopper wright behind your clevis hook. This is to prevent the bottom of your hardware going in to far of your roller for your winch.

How long is the protective sleeve?

Approx. 3 feet long. I do not use mine at all. It binds up the rope.

Did you have to purchase an additional attachment to make it compatible with a steel cable winch? I can't easily install.

No, but...if you have a roller fairlead (used with wire cable) you may want to switch to a hawse (smooth aluminum slotted) fairlead. Roller fairleads can abrade or pinch synthetic rope and weaken them significantly.
