Q: Are they safe to use on photos?

I’ve written on the backs of some of my pictures and seen no ill effects. The packaging doesn’t say photo safe though. I mostly got them for art projects because they write on almost anything. I love these pencils. If the writing got wet at all it would smear as these are water soluble.

Q: Can I buy just one pencil, to try this?

I don't know, but it's cheaper by the box, that what I bought.

Q: Is this the "marks all" stabillo pencil in black? I was told to get that version of it for a class. Thank you

yes, some people call it the stability all pencil and some refer to it by number. It is a black pencil that will write on most surfaces and can be activated by water to make a wider grey line, great for creating shadowing around your images.

Q: I bought these and they do not erase cleanly. Nor did the lead completely dissolve. It mixed with the water color and turned the color darker.

Quoting from a description of this pencil from dickblick.com: "Stabilo's soft, waxy leads mark on virtually any surface. This is not an artist colored pencil, for drawing and sketching, but rather a colored marking pencil". I interpret this to mean that it is not easily removed. However, I find it is really great to sketch with and then go over areas with a water brush for a very interesting effect. Hope that helps.
