Yes, the sun “wise” function works with the unit inside. It turns the power on and off based on the date and latitude and works well. There is also a separate photocell mode if you can locate the transformer where sunlight can reach it.

Absolutely. As long as you don't exceed the maximum wattage or length of wire run you're good.

You might have more lights than what the transformer is capable of. There are several types of wattages on the transformer. Check the capability of the transformer and then check the amount of lights you are trying to connect to it. I had the same issue and had to buy a higher wattage transformer.
