Great bait cast reel for the money!
Getting back into this reel is a little challenging learning how to dial in your weighted lures or bait before casting is the key to an accurate and long distant cast. Be sure to check out videos on youtube on how to adjust your reel before casting or you will end up with some backlash which you don't want. It will take a few tries before getting comfortable with it then dial it the way you like. Might be good for beginners to learn how to use bait cast reels. Great reel in general.

Synergy Ti 14 - the channel catfish value of the decade!
I fish very frequently, and prefer the spincast-type reels most of the time for their "old school" feel and simplicity.I've tried a whole lot from the Zebco line, from the 33 Platinum (another good one), to the 808 (very heavy duty), to the 404 and 606 (both crap), to the Pro Staff 2010 (it's fair). I've also tried the Bass Pro Shops Extreme Spincast Reel ETXSC8 (fair).I was very happy with my 33 Platinum - a $35 reel - for many day-to-day uses, but had a couple of issues using it for channel catfish. First, the 33 Platinum uses 10 lb test, and I wanted something in 14-16 lb . Second, the reel pins hang hard on cloth bobber stops when casting using a slip bobber rig, preventing good casting and forcing you to manually pull the line out at the bobber stop to clear the hang. Since a slip bobber rig is pretty much my go-to for channel catfish, it was a major problem, keeping me from setting the bobber depth deeper than the length of my rod. Also, the gear ratio of the 33 Patinum, while perfect for day-to-day Crappie, Bass, Bluegill and Redear, was just barely on the high side for heavier fish (at 4.1:1).I happened to be checking the Shakespeare site for a rod when I stumbled across the "reels" section. I found this reel listed - the top of their lineup - including this size, native to 14 lb test. The gear ratio is right where I wanted it, at 3.8:1. I couldn't tell if its pins would jam on my bobber stop, but was willing to give it a try at the $15 price point.Well, it works perfectly! Good power, good build quality, solid feel, with all the features you need. Bobber stops clear the pin perfectly without even a hint of hang.As far as disadvantages? It "only" has two ball bearings, but that is an overused method of evaluating reels, as evidenced by the fact that the very finest spincast reels from the days of yore had only a single ball bearing. It is solidly built, but not as solid as, say, the 33 platinum - which is more than double the price. What a bargain!I have mine mounted on a Cabelas Whuppin Stick WSCML70-2 and rigged with a Thill TG Waggler slip float and a #6 Eagle Claw treble hook for punch bait. The perfect combination for getting a mess of channels!Edit: Within hours of posting this review, I caught this 28" channel catfish in a local pond using the Shakespeare reel and Cabelas rod mentioned above.

GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK!!
FITS GREAT ON MY POLE AND GOOD BALANCE, REEL DRAG AND SPOOL NEED CASTING PRACTICE(LINE GOT QUITE A FEW HAIR BALLS AT FIRST) BUT STARTS TO LOOSEN UP AND BREAK IN AFTER A FEW HRS OF EXTENDED USE AND THEN ITS MORE PREDICTABLE. GREAT REEL FOR THE $$$
