A Terrific Foundation for All Golfers
I picked up a club at the age of 6 but NEVER received any formal instruction from anyone including a parent who was quite a good golfer. My athleticism as a youth masked a LOT of bad habits that quite honestly stopped my progression as a golfer. I was called a "natural" but the reality is that I still needed proper instruction to attend to the details that would move me to higher levels of golf. Later in life I put down my clubs for nearly 12 years until my 40s. After picking up my clubs again my athleticism was still there but so were those ingrained bad habits I picked up in my youth. I had potential but I was terribly inconsistent. I didn't understand my swing and couldn't diagnose issues when they went wrong. To correct these bad habits I resorted to Google and to other written materials BUT Tom Watson's videos and book are my go to resource...and it's not even close. Tom Watson's materials speak to the fundamentals (with the update that eliminates the "reverse C" finish) of a sound, repeatable, quality golf swing. All pro golfers will say that if something is going wrong with their swing it's typically something that has gone wrong with the fundamentals of a quality swing. I think we amateurs are always looking for silver bullet answers (or swing aides) but the answer is less "sexy". The answer is to understand the fundamentals inside and out and THEN when something goes wrong you can isolate the causes of the issue OR elicit help to fix it because we all need that extra pair of eyes. In short...the fundamentals of a quality golf swing aren't life altering revelations (as promised by other golfing materials)...it's about seemingly simple fundamentals that are incredibly difficult to work in concert. In fact, when I hear criticism of Watson's materials I hear about how you could get these materials elsewhere and that they seem simple...blah, blah...well...exactly...the fundamental parts of a quality golf swing ARE NOT difficult to identify...its the work it takes to orchestrate these seemingly simple parts into a consistent whole that's difficult. Watson is simply giving you the fundamentals and there's no way around it...you have to work constantly to keep those fundamentals in working order...pro or amateur. The one thing stated by Watson in one of his resources that I respect is that while he's presented the fundamentals of a quality, repeatable swing...a swing is more than the sum of its parts...YOU have to continually work to keep all these parts working together. Don't get caught up in quick fix golfing schemes...just keep working at the fundamentals. My favorite parts of his video and book are...and these aren't flashy...a) the grip and set up, b) the grip and set up...(yes, that tells you what I think is important)...c) the proper loading of the right leg (using a quiet, turn inside a barrel, mid section), and d) the action of the left heel (my issue with my lack of swing consistency was poor weight shift...a constant battle..and that left heel was is a key trigger for me...just an amazing difference). FYI...The other book I keep going back to is Dave Pelz's "Short Game Bible". If you use Watson's materials in concert with Dave Pelz's materials...that's all you need as a reference guide for the rest of your golfing life...period.

Best Golf Instruction DVD
Tom Watson and his producers have put together quite a masterpiece of golf instruction with this DVD set. I have been playing for 16 years and have viewed lots of golf DVDs and read countless books. The result was a double digit handicap and lots of frustration even though everyone I played with said I had a great "looking" swing. But there was just something missing. The elusive 'secret' to my golf swing that neither I nor any golf professionals could pinpoint. Well, in a little over an hour (the first DVD), Tom Watson helped me correct my fundamentals and gave me a second life in golf. Tom explains the big picture concepts of the swing and then tells you about the small details that will make a huge impact on your ball striking ability. And he goes over these fundamentals in a logical, progressive manner, so you learn about them as they should happen in the golf swing. Now, I don't write reviews right after I buy something. I have been using Tom's instruction for 2 months now. But to be honest, the first day I took it to the range, I almost jumped for joy. Not only could I hit my target, but I could also 'work' the ball in any direction that I wanted. And when a shot did go astray, I knew exactly why it had happened and what I could do to fix it. So 2 months later, I am still striking the ball 90% better than I ever have in my life on a CONSISTENT basis. Bottom line....you will not regret buying this DVD set!!! I wish I would've had it when I started up the game. This DVD set makes almost all other instruction obselete. In fact, I'll be selling all of my other books and DVDs soon.

Comprehensive lesson from one of the masters of golf.
I like the DVD overall. It has all the basics as Watson sees it and he explains most things very well. It's also quite timely for him to do this DVD, perhaps it was a long time coming, he could've done one earlier in his career, but he has recently gained even more respect and admiration from his achievement at the age of 59 in almost winning The Open, and the DVD makes point of that fact as a starting point to the lessons. The only problems I have with it is that it is disappointing that it is not in HD. I am sure they could've done it, but I suppose they wanted it to be as accessible to as many people as possible and more people have the regular DVD, so that does make sense - but, the quality of the picture is only so-so when up-converted by my BR machine automatically, that it looks kinda cheap. I also faced a few glitches on the DVD with skipping, and after I checked that the DVD was dust-free and scratch free, I played it again and skipped at the same parts, so that was annoying. Other than that, I learned a lot, took a few good tips for things I've been working on lately, so it's a worthwhile investment, as I will be reverting back to the lessons over and over again.

Exactly what 3 stars means - "It's Okay"
Someone else made the comment that you could just as easily gather a selection of YouTube videos on different aspects of the game. That is basically what you get here. And, there is quite a bit of filler watching Mr. Watson demonstrate swings of each type of shot - those just aren't very useful. Having said that, there were certainly tips which have proved very useful as swing thoughts to me (especially tips on placement of the ball in the stance, keeping the hands relaxed at address and during the swing, and a couple others.) I am a big fan of Tom Watson, so having him in the videos instead of some nameless club pro (or worse) was very nice; however, I'm not sure it was worth the money.

golf made simple
This dvd set last about two hours and forty five minutes. It is broken into 45 different segements regarding every aspect of the game. It teaches you the fundamentals of every part of golf. Have you ever thought what part of the ball you should be looking at as you address the ball? Have you ever tried to visualize the angle the club should have as you take the club away and then strike the ball? This video answers every question I have ever had about golf in the last 50 years. Tom Watson through the use of super slow motion, animation, redundant drills, and continuous conversation explains the golf swing as you have never heard it discussed or visualized. While somewhat technical, I think that even a beginner will benefit from watching this. If you don't grip the club corrrectly, it is pretty tough to hit the ball right. That said, even the most experience golfer will benefit. I have always had trouble visualizing the correct turning of the shoulders and tilt of the back at address. Segment 3 or 4 uses a long pole over Watsons shoulders which connected with me as to the correct way to turn. Bottom line, buy this dvd and watch those segments multiple times for the portions of your game that need the most help.

Golfer of a Lifetime
TW, the original, is one of the all-time great golfing legends. And the legend continues to grow, as we all witnessed at Turnberry. That a champion golfer would be asked to produce an instruction video is no surprise and traces its history all the way back to Bobby Jones' Hollywood golf instruction videos produced in the 1930's. "Lessons of a Lifetime" was obviously made by a very intelligent man who has spent a lot of time thinking about the golf swing. And it takes a certain amount of introspection and humility to admit that despite having won 8 majors, he didn't completely understand it until 1994 when he says he discovered "the secret". Let me just say this as an avid golfer used to paying an hourly rate of $100-120 for golf tune-ups: this is the best instruction I have received, probably ever. I didn't say best video, I said instruction, period, live or on tape. Take a look at the simplicity of his swing. Compare it to the many videos you can find on the web of Ben Hogan. While they differ in plane--Tom is more upright--both are exemplars of simplicity and efficiency. I have Hogan's book, Five Lessons. I used to refer to it often. It was trail blazing in its analysis-- a new benchmark for golf instruction. I would put TW's CD's in the same camp, except his instruction is far far easier to understand. ( There's something cryptic about Hogan's supination and pronation thesis-- gives me a headache frankly. ) I could go on about how Mr. Watson's approach is so much simpler and useful compared to today's back breaking contortions advocated by the guru's. Most former golf champions his age spend their mornings in traction to relieve back pain before going off to do a few small appearances here and there, so I will stop here: Tom Watson is 61 and his golf swing still works effectively at the highest levels of golf.

Excellent!
Great, easy to follow video which includes tips for both new and experienced golfers. I purchased this for my wife who only started playing last year. We tried lessons with teaching professionals, but they are too self serving...wanting you to keep signing up for more lessons. We both learned more in the first 30 minutes of the video than all the lessons combined for a fraction of the cost. Thanks Tom, well done!
