I used a filter in it. there are only 4-5 holes along the bottom ridge. It works ok. I would have liked something that was a bit quicker in the flow of water. I recently purchased a metal coffee dripper that has a sturdy wire mesh cone and use no filter with it as the mesh is very fine. I think it works great

what size filter paper does this use? (size 1 or 2?)

Both fit, but I prefer size 2 filters, even for a single cup of coffee. Size 1 requires three pours to fill the cup; size 2 requires only 2.
