maths practice book
This book is an incredible resource for parents to use for their children to practice at home. My child loved it! The book contains 40 tests, all organised by different topics, which is plenty for most 7-8 years to do.The first part of each test is the warm-up. The swiftness of the one-minute tests lets children get on with the questions quickly, allowing children to refresh their knowledge about the topic, then follows it up with more similar questions designed to finish about 2.5 mins dependent on child’s ability. If the children have a good understanding of the topic, then they can go straight to the third part, the challenge section, which contains some mental maths questions to ensure children will be stretched. Again, parents or children can time how many minutes the children need to complete each part to monitor their progress.Parents can use the test separately or all in one go. However, it may be advised that you don’t force your child to do many tests at once, as there are ample questions and you don’t want to put your child off maths and detract from their enjoyment. If the child is not very confident with the topic, then I would advise you to do the first part, check the answers with your child (using the answers at the back!) and if your child made any mistakes, to talk with them to help them figure out what went wrong. Then use the second part to do more practice and help them feel confident. Again, check the answers and finish the third part. There are mind gyms in some tests which is like an extended mental maths challenge and tips to help child to answer certain type of question.I don't think this book is just for 7-8 year olds though. It would also be suitable for some 6-9 year olds too, depending on their style and ability. No doubt it will give your child lots of questions to complete and help them understand the topic better, gradually build up their maths skills and confidence and also prepare them to get used to finishing tests with a time limit. For more capable children, they can even try to finish the test under exam conditions at home. I would highly recommend this book for any parent who thinks their child needs extra practise after school or who just wants to see how their child is doing.
