how many mounting brackets come with the curtain rod?

None came in my package. I also received two rods that were the same size and could not fit together.

It's like any rod set of a left side and a right side....one fits inside the other and you extend to the width you need.

Is there an extension rod sold separately for this rod?

I don’t think you need one it extends. However I don’t believe they sell one separately.

Why does the smaller size cost more than the larger size?

Because it’s smaller in size, the larger one is more because it’s longer
