This book has changed my life and the way I think about food and health – it will do the same for you!
After I finished reading this book, the first thought that came to my mind is that I wish I had known all this sooner. The Real Food Grocery Guide offers an invaluable education on how to better navigate those overwhelming grocery store aisles, how to understand those confusing (and sometimes deceptive!) labels, and importantly how to select the best foods for better health.I’ve always lived a healthy life and eaten quite clean, but after reading this book I’ve also realized the many ways I am coming up short, because for example I never really knew (or cared) where my meat came from, and I never read the labels on my eggs. Maria encourages the reader to be more thoughtful about food choices and sources, because food affects so much more than just your weight, and after reading her book and adopting some of her principles (I was fortunate to get an early copy), I could not agree more; I feel better, I have more energy and the changes I’ve made have also helped me with my triathlon training. I’ve since bought 9 more copies of the book to give to my friends and family in Dubai. One of my major takeaways from this book is that different produce contain different nutrients and anti-oxidants, and so while it is important to eat plenty of plant-based foods, its equally important to routinely switch up your vegetables. While Popeye got it right in that he ate plenty of spinach, he also got it wrong in that he only ate spinach, and initially I too only ate spinach and broccoli since they were the most popular. I now routinely incorporate many more vegetables such as asparagus, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, zucchini and green beans into my meals because I know the different nutritional benefits of each. For a guy who hasn’t done much cooking in his life, and even less shopping for groceries, I will be spending more time in the grocery store, because this book has given me the knowledge and confidence, and at the same time makes it so easy. For example, and going back to my favorite section, Maria offers an in-depth look at the benefits of over 50 types of produce that is visually beautiful and each so simply and effectively broken down to 3 sections: how to select, store and prepare. And through this Maria also teaches you how to save money – useful tips on how to select will mean you no longer waste money bringing home brown avocados, and useful tips on how to store will keep your lettuce fresher for longer.Simply put, this book makes shopping for healthy food fun and infinitely easier – I highly recommend it.
