Q: im looking for a basic ota dvr is this the one i need and do i need to buy anything else besides antenna

You will need to have an internet connection a external hard drive and antenna to connect Tablo to have OTA DVR service. Once these four requirements are in place you’ll have a reliable system. To get the premium features there is a small monthly fee but it’s worth the few dollars for the convenience. I’m using a 2T hard drive and it allows me more than adequate storage. One of the best features to me is the ability to access my Tablo anywhere I have internet/phone service. When traveling/Rving I can enjoy all the live and recorded programming on my Tablo.

Q: Do I have to pay extra for the “automatic commercial skip” that is advertised for this model?

Yes - and it is NOT eligible for the lifetime subscription they offer the non HDMI units (as per their website March 19 2021) That killed the deal for me. My guess is they are trying to monetize it differently - like HDMI is going to be used more? IDK but that is a 'no go' for me.

Q: Can you record a show and watch another show tha you are not recording at the same time?

Yes. The Dual in Tablo Dual means there are 2 tuners so you can watch one program while recording another. You also can watch something that you've previously recorded while recording another program.

Q: Can a tv be hooked up to dish network and still have Tablo hooked up to record ota programs on same tv? Or do I have to disconnect dish on that tv?

If both can physically be hooked to TV at same time it should. Tablo will only record over the air programs so nothing through dish can be recorded. You will need some kind of antennae. I didn't have much luck with the kind that paste in the window. Installed one in attic that is working well.
