brilliant book would have been better with a bit more depth
Spoiler********while I did love this book and it drew me in definitely, read it within a day I've missed having a binge book, I couldn't give it 5 stars is partially because it irritated me that after 11 years of friendship ryland was acting all boyfriend-ish all of a sudden abruptly wanting to leave his fathers business and giving her a protection necklace without any real reason why the change, but mostly that Joclyn didnt really think about her mother after she died it only mentioned her twice, she just kept harping on about ryland- I mean every person who remembers teenage years knows a crush can feel huge with all the hormones plus theyre like destined mates and that but still the death of her mum should have been a bit more important than it was, she was grieving ryland while he was still there and traumatised by her father leaving but not even bothered about her own mum being dead, i mean shes not a full grown person yet barely sixteen it would devastate any 16 year old who was there when their mother got murdered over them but she didnt even talk about wishing she could be at the funeral to say goodbye or anything just the one memory about doing each others nails and a brief shock of hearing it on the news (which was short lived as ryland turned up for an interview), no childhood memories or flashbacks or grief no thinking about what her mum would think or trying to make her proud, general things you'd be thinking if your mum had died. it was like she's gone, next.

3/5
I think I would have devoured this book when I was a teenager, romance and action and magic, what’s not to love? Unfortunately now as a 28 year old, it just felt a little young to me? Not what I enjoy reading anymore sadly.

loved it but didn't at the same time.... but still a must read!!
This book is brilliant! It kept me captivated the whole way through. I didn't want to put it down, I even wanted to read it at work!! The story is brilliant and keeps you guessing, I laughed in places and even cried!I loved it for all these reasons but didn't because of the ending. It was just too sad and annoying. I got too excited and read the blurbs and comments from the other books in the series and realised that the way this one ends is basically how it stays which is but wrenchingly sad and is a bit disappointing to say the least. I will always route for Ryland all the way.l even if it doesn't go that way. Illyan is great but just not the same and for me just ruins it a bit. It made me want to scream at the book and the writer and say "what are you doing" I get that it makes for a good read and allows you to carry the story on, however it would have been nice to see that she got him back in the end not belong to someone else.HOWEVER I am still yet to read the rest of the books so my opinion may change on Illyan. For me Ryland was more of an appeal as a character as he had known her forever!

Review of all three in the series: Superb!
I wanted to wait until I had read all three books in the series before writing a review, as all too often you find the second or third book to be a disappointment and wish you had been able to warn people off. Many writers seem to run out of ideas but are determined to make a trilogy. This is the first of four books, the fourth is yet to be released (ETA Jan 2014). It's a superb series. The plot of the series is clear, understandable and doesn't leave you behind despite being about a magical realm and involving characters speaking a different language. The scenes flow naturally, and you come to both understand and empathise with the characters. It's a story of love (both returned and unrequited), betrayal and corrupting forces. The different characters' tales are interwoven beautifully. There isn't a boring moment - but it's not all fighting and violence.I truly recommend the series.

Brilliant
This book had me gripped from the first few pages. I love Ryland so much, he's perfect for Jocelyn. So much action in this first book I didn't want to put it down. SPOILER ALERT ......Ryland protects her right from the beginning making her his. Iylan her other protector is sweet but for goodness sake she is 16.... he's like 800 yrs old .... Ryland is being controlled by his father, eventually he can't even remember Jocelyn which broke my heart and tries to kill her. The sweet little one liners when he remembers her like "remember I will love you always" and "wait for me" almost brought me to tears. It's so sad... I'm sorry guys I know from the amazing reviews left that everyone is routing for Iylan... but I'm Ryland all the way. He's not only her age but he's her best friend, saviour and has loved her from being so small. He can't help the things he does to Jocelyn because not only has his father wiped his memories but he isn't in control of his own actions. So in the end I hope Jocelyn picks him .... what a wicked fight at the end of the book .... can't wait to read the second book ....

Enjoyed muchly
I sometimes felt as if it moved too slowly and there is much still to understand about the magic talked of in the book. I can't quite picture the characters in my mind so perhaps the next book will flesh them out some more so I can see myself continuing with this series.

Heartfelt to the end.
A roller coaster ride of emotions. This narrative bridges the normal world and two opposing magical sects. The sects are the mainframe of the storyline, but do not take prominence until the end, making the greater part of the story the turning of childhood friendship to love, and the healing of damaged childhood self doubts. A very successful mix of misunderstood relationships, new friendships, new understandings and character building battles that foresee a mind devouring next episode. For teenagers to “seenagers”(senior teenagers 60+)Don’t ever stop writing such realistic fantasy.
