The Flower Man

This is a beautifully-illustrated book with a unique concept of a picture book without words. But there is much more to this book. The idea behind it is a very nice one -- flower man comes to a black-and-white (i.e. colorless) sad town and gives a flower to a little girl. She is filled with happiness, quickly becomes colorful, and gives a flower to somebody else. As we leaf through the pages, we see more and more color on its pages as happiness spread by the flower man fills the town. The last picture in the book is the flower man leaving town (now in full color), presumably so that he can go to the next sad town and cheer up its inhabitants.Originally, I bought this book for my kindergarten-age son. The pictures contain a lot of details, and they occupied him for a long time. What I like about that book is that it leaves a lot of room for imagination. The characters (city inhabitants) that appear throughout the book gradually change: not just their colors change, but what they do, who they are, and who they are with. That allows kids to make up their own story, basing it on pictures but using their own imagination to fill in gaps. And that's excellent.Older kids can use this book as a writing prompt. The book's premise is "everyone has a story," so kids can pick a specific character and write the story about what made that character sad and what helped him/her overcome that sadness. With adults in creative writing classes, this book can be used for a quick exercise in point of view.A great book for any age! A conversation-starter.

The Flower Man is a great book for all ages. This is a picture book where each turn of the page reveals the progression of a story where an old man moves into a cheerless town, purchases and fixes up a centralized house and starts handing out flowers. Anything that hasn't been impacted by the old man's generosity (giving out flowers) is black and white, and as his good deeds spread so does the color.My two year old daughter chooses this book frequently from her large library of books. We like to invent stories for each character as they progress throughout the book and every time we look we find something new.

This wordless story is an excellent gift for children of any age (even adults) and presents a clear message of kindness and compassion through simple, daily intentions towards those around us.Beautiful pictures allow for extended conversations with small children, as they point to different parts of the (detailed) page and talk about what they see, what's happening in the people's lives, and how those things are different than they were in the pages before.

I love the message of this book. Simple acts of kindness can really change lives. I use this with children and adults. I use it for trainings and for teaching simple lessons. It’s perfect because it has no words, and children of all ages love looking at the pictures and figuring out the story.

This book is a beautiful WORDLESS picture book about one person's power to bring joy and spread love. Great illustrations and very nice story--especially great for older children who cannot yet read.

We buy the Flower Man as gifts for everyone. The message is wonderful and the artwork is fantastic.

Excited to add this wordless picture book to my collection of such in my speech and language therapy room! Fun story, awesome pics!

It’s just what I wanted!

Love it! My 5 year old grandson finds this book fascinating, every time we 'read' ot he finds something new to giggle about. There are endless possibilities for his imagination in the detailed illustrations.

It is a birthday present to my friend. She is a grown up but she loves it and manages to spot the mouse on every page.
