390109 Modular File Cube Storage System, Espresso

I LOVE these! I was originally looking for a two drawer real wood file cabinet, but not finding anything in the exact size I needed. Same as with the "cube", although these are not 100% wood, they look very nice, the laminate is not flaky, it's nicely done, it's put together very well, he whole thing is built very sturdy, the directions were very clear, each piece clearly labeled, and it was very easy to put together. And, the price was right. For what I wanted, it's perfect, and I love the dark brown "chocolate" color. I bought 2 of these and 2 of the cubes to stack and replace laundry baskets, which support a flat top work surface. These are much better, look nicer, are practical, and just all around better, and now I have much more storage space underneath! I'm very hard to impress, but I'm very impressed.

There are a few issues with this file cube, most of which could be eliminated with clearer assembly instructions. So, let's start there. It would be helpful if the directions indicated which way is up on the pieces for which it matters, most importantly, the drawer sides. If assembled incorrectly, the drawer is still functional, but you won't be able to use the stops that prevent it from falling out of the cube. This may or may not be a concern for you. It is also unclear whether the cube sides should have the (pre-installed) drawer guides on top or bottom, as the diagram shows them in the middle. As it's a generic cube, it doesn't matter too much, but once the drawer is assembled, it is clear whether you did it right or not. Perhaps drawer assembly should come first in the directions, to make it clear. The drawer front does not sit quite flush with the drawer frame, top to bottom, but that does not affect function.Finally, be advised that the pre-assembled drawer front will require different screws than those used to (not) hold it to the drawer frame. After assembly, the drawer front came off in my hand. I had to find larger (but not longer) screws to hold the drawer front on. If this happens with yours, be careful, as there are two small brads sticking out that also do nothing to hold it together, but are sharp!All that said, once successfully assembled, this meets my expectations for an inexpensive, ready-to-assemble filing option. It seems fairly sturdy and has the neutral appearance I needed for under a kitchen desk. I am satisfied with the value for money balance and I think it will meet basic filing needs.

I was very skeptical on purchasing this, mostly for the awful reviews. But, I was in desperate need of a small (affordable) filing cabinet to store my pay stubs and financial documents for the year. i really REALLY enjoy the look of these modular cubes, they are cost efficient and small enough to work in any room. It was not very difficult to put together, it took me about 30 minutes (while running in and out of the house). I think it COULD be a little more sturdy, but for particle board (and the price) I was not expecting much. It is not very big on the inside, I was able to fit 25 hanging files, a few folders, and a 2.5 inch binder. I also have it sitting on the floor because I don't think the pull out drawer could withstand not being on a flat surface.All in all I give it 5 stars, I am thoroughly impressed with the quality for the price. I know the bad reviews had me extremely skeptical, but I love this piece and would definitely purchase it again!

I bought this to replace the big metal one in our home office. It's the perfect size and my husband and I put it together quickly and easily. It had all the parts and it lined up properly - I know this wasn't the case for some people. It's not fine furniture by any standards, but if you are just looking for some extra storage, it works great and the black looks nice with my antique wooden desk - I'm glad I didn't go with the fake wood kind - it would've looked tacky.

I am a huge fan of modular storage and have used cubes like these for years, arranging and rearranging them as home entertainment units, desks, or wall storage. I love this collection because I get the versatility of lightweight modular storage but my living room and workspace look adult and elegant--not like the college dorm room or back closet where someone might expect to see modular storage (in hard plastic, pressboard, and wire rack styles).The file drawer cubes get only a 3-star rating because I am worried about how well the hanging system will hold up over time. The metal rods for hanging files are held up in back by short screws that hold the rods against the sides of the pressboard back face of the drawer. The pressboard cracked from the screw hole up to the top as I screwed in the rods. I worry that if I fill the drawer to capacity (as the size of the drawer allows it to hold a lot of files, which could get heavy) or handle the files roughly, the pressboard holding the screws may fail. In the front, the rods are inserted into grooves in the face which feel sturdier. If only the hanging system were similarly sturdy in the back, I would give this piece a higher rating. The drawer opens smoothly enough now, but if filled to capacity, I suspect the weight might make it harder to open, as the drawer is hung on plastic glides rather than rolling open on casters. On the positive, the plastic glides keep the drawer from falling open on their own, as cheap caster systems have done to me in the past. With my existing Foremost cube collection, I value the utility this piece adds while maintaining the versatile, unified and elegant appearance of my home office. Compared to other modular systems in this price range, this is the most aesthetically pleasing and relatively sturdy collection I've had. However, as a standalone piece, I am not sure I would purchase the file drawer again without improvements to the hanging system.

Big enough and small enough to have a in an office

The quality and finishing of the product are not the best. One of the pieces arrived with some sort of split (see attached photo). Instructions are kind of difficult to understand but the diagrams are very useful.

I love the colour but that’s about it. I had to have white for my home office. They assembly instructions are not clear, some of the hardware provided was not the right size (the screw heads are too small to hold the metal file supports in place making them loose.) The drawer is loose when opening and closing. (This is not due to my skill level as I am experienced and have assembled many pieces of furniture and other items in the past without problems.)
