Q: How do I open the lid?????????

It slides open. Unfortunately I can't recommend this particular style lid . It leaks terribly! The Primula that has a clip lid, where you push the mechanism down and it clicks shut is the way to go. It's indestructible. I hope this helps

Q: Can you put carbonated beverages in this?

Yes. I've used mine for hot coffee, hot tea, cold water, soda, cold tea and lemonade.

Q: I Thought these were spill proof; they are not?

Yes they are spill proof. Sometimes there is a little liquid trapped on top of lid from where you are drinking. Use a paper towel and tip it the opposite way you drink - no more drips. Its just left over from drinking. I over heated my water for tea and put in tumbler. When to my room to drink my morning tea and it exploded. The top fly off and the tumbler landed on the floor. Make sure not to heat over water more than175 not 180. I like hot tea and was testing the tumbler. Love them. Cold stays cold Hot stays med to warm.
