Doesnt the cardboard to hold ots shape get wet?

Cardboard? The entire trash container is completely covered in tough plastic! It’s very strong, stands up to my 6’ 4” 230 pound husband smashing trash into it every day! We’ve had ours for almost a year! It’s easy to clean, just take of the top and wash out with dish soap and rinse! Better still I just put a used plastic grocery bag in it for a liner then throw that out with the trash! Less washing the trash container!

Can I put this in the washing machine?

I don't know why you would need to, the inside is lined in plastic and very easy to wipe out with a wet cloth or paper towel with cleaner. Or a Lysol wipe. I personally would not put it in the washer because it might damage the structure.

How big is the opening (inches)?

7 and 1/4 inches. Square. The top with the round opening does not fit well so we don't use it. My husband put a piece of flat lead in the bottom so it won't scoot or tip over. Works perfectly!! It has straps to use to keep it from moving but there was nothing close by to secure them to and still be able to reach it comfortably.

How do you secure the straps?

Wrap them around whatever is nearby and they are velcro. I don't use them in my truck because I have a perfect spot for it. But they are very adjustable. It's a great trash can.
